Description:

The Positive Train Control” (PTC) program entails developing safety critical applications meant to prevent accidents by automatically stopping a train in response to risk stimuli. Though generic in its intent, the implementation is very specific to each Class 1 Railroad, including CN, with systems and components tailor made to cater to its specific track size operations. The Back Office Segment (BOS), a central part of the PTC systems, provides the back office functionality of PTC BOS is an In-house product being developed by CN for it specific operations and safety and is classified as Safety critical system. BOS receives stores, translates, and transfers information from CN Railroad specific systems such as Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD), PTC Management Information System (PTC-MIS) and Systems Management System (SMS). BOS also receives requests from locomotives and responds with required information from Railroad specific Systems or Mobile Device Manager (MDM). BOS is responsible for transforming CN railroad specific information into a common format that all PTC equipped locomotives of any railroad can decipher. Conversely, BOS will transform the common, locomotive sourced, PTC formatted data into a format that is understandable to CN specific systems. The BOS also ensures critical Operating Information such as Authorities and Bulletins (i.e. Mandatory Directives) are delivered to locomotives in a timely manner. The BOS will also periodically check with all registered locomotives to determine whether Mandatory Directives exists in BOS for a particular locomotive matches the Mandatory Directives that exist in the locomotive.
