For some of the materials evaluated, there is little information available on the nature and extent of hazard. Assignments include conducting evaluations of a variety of industrial environments, including heavy industry or highly complex research and development work, and involve the identification and evaluation of hazards about which little may be known. Surveys measuring airborne contaminants often involve combinations of exposures for which acceptable concentrations must be determined. Other complicating factors include new or unusual processes and difficult control problems. Resourcefulness is necessary in planning and developing individualized methods and approaches to obtain valid and complete evaluations

Served as Special Assistant to the Director of Health and Safety Policy. Duties involved directing, coordinating, and supporting Defense Health and Occupational Medicine activities worldwide under the direction of the Director of Health and Safety Policy. Responsible for assisting in oversight of the Department-wide (A,AF, N, and MC) Safety and Health program policies and initiatives, including the Defense Occupational Environmental Health Readiness System-Industrial Hygiene (DOEHRS-IH) reports occupational & environmental health readiness Program that actively tracks air, water, soil, & environmental hazards for the DoD Military Health System though an 8-step DoD IH Exposure Assessment Model.. This information system includes a Health Hazard Assessment (HHA), in addition to models dealing with acoustic energy, biological substances, chemical substances, musculoskeletal trauma, oxygen deficiency, radiation energy, temperature extremes and cost avoidance model (MCAM). Is the process used within the Army to identify, assess, and eliminate or control health hazards associated with the life cycle management of materiel items such as weapon systems, munitions, equipment, clothing, training devices, and other materiel systems. The HHA program addresses the potential effects of materiel systems health hazards on the personnel who test, produce, use, maintain, repair, or support the systems. Through application of biomedical knowledge and principles, HHA directly supports Army officials engaged in developing, manufacturing, operating, maintaining, demilitarizing, and disposing of materiel systems. The HHA is systems engineering from a health or medical perspective.

The nature of my duties also included as follows:

Co-authored the "Department of Defense’s Report to Congress on Beryllium Work-Related Illnesses" as required by Section 8120 of the Department of Defense Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2001, recommending whether or not DoD personnel should receive workers' compensation for past exposure to beryllium. It was recommended that because DoD has an extremely low incidence of beryllium-related disease and ongoing occupational disease prevention efforts, additional compensation legislation is not needed for DoD employees.
