Position: Dormitory Manager

I had direct supervisory responsibility for one janitorial employee. My duties included managing 120 rooms, in two dormitories, for the students of the 187th Medical Company (BAMC). My daily activities included: processing students in and out of the dormitories, communicating with the maintenance department for building repairs, contacting Goodwill for lawn services, and making key cards for the rooms. On a monthly basis, I was required to order toilet paper, disinfectant, mops and brooms, garbage bags, and other supplies for the buildings. Frequently, it was necessary to make contact with the Captain, Sergeant Major, and the First Sergeant of the company, regarding the condition of the individual rooms. Often, I was called after duty hours to resolve situations that the Charge of Quarter (C.Q.) could not resolve. At times, I was called upon to manage other dormitories when the regular manager was absent.

During my 27 years as a firefighter, I combated various types of fires, and responded to medical and other types of emergency situations. Many times, I was called upon to substitute when regularly assigned supervisors were absent, and I have worked in several different firehouses around the city. I have an excellent driving record and, along with my many other duties as a firefighter, drove a fire engine for 17 years on this job.

Additional training for all firefighters was required by the State of Texas. This training included classes such as: Hazardous Material Identification, Bomb Detection, Fuel Tank Identification, High-speed Driving Procedures, Infectious Diseases, and Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Hazards.

Working as a firefighter honed my abilities to be adaptable and dependable in a variety of high-pressure situations, and to deal comfortably with both co-workers and the general public.

I retired from the City of San Antonio Fire Department on May 21, 2003.

United States Air Force Reserves

Position: Air Transportation Superintendent

For over 35 years, I was a member of the U.S. Air Force Reserves. I was most recently assigned to the 433rd Military Airlift Wing at Lackland Air Force Base. For ten years as a Reservist, I served as a supervisor. I was promoted to the Rank of Senior Master Sergeant (E-8) in November of 2001. Some of my many responsibilities have included:

- Assembling pallets for aircraft loading.

- Completing EPR reports for first-line supervisors

M-358 truck, 40K and 25K loaders, Humvee.

- Building and vehicle maintenance.

- Report composition and production.

- General warehouse work.

As a Lead Mechanic with this company, I dissembled aircraft jacks for the military.

The jacks would arrive at the shop as one unit. I was required to ensure that these jacks were stripped of old paint and rust. Once stripped, they were repainted and new parts were added. After this procedure they were crated and shipped to various military installations around the world.

After completion of basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, I attended the Air Force Administrative School at Amarillo Air Force Base, Texas, from December, 1967 to March, 1968. After completion of the course, I was assigned to various Air Force installations during my four-year tour. My duties included typing and filing. I worked in Unit Orderly rooms, Postal Centers, and Message Centers processing secret and classified correspondence. Occasionally, I was ordered to process Congressional inquiries.
