This study was conducted at the Agincourt Health and socio-Demographic Surveillance System site, Mpumalanga Province. We studied self-perceived stress, demographic data and physiological determinants of stress and resilience in a longitudinal life-course perspective. Prior to start of the prospective study we will conduct a pilot in which 150 adolescents (13-14 years old) where recruited. We used well-validated questionnaires in order to explore issues related to above mentioned items. Moreover, the participants underwent a physical examination to measure their body mass index, blood pressure and heart rate. Blood samples will be taken to assess
cardiovascular risk factors such as total cholesterol and glucose and HIV tests. Our overall aim was to test the hypothesis that high stress and low resilience to stress during adolescence lead to high blood pressure in young adulthood.
SUCSES (Sustainability in Communal Socio-Ecological Systems) The aim of the SUCSES project was to gain a better understanding of the dynamic interactions between humans and the environment in rural South Africa in space and time, and the consequences of these for ecological sustainability and human well-being.
