Southern Bell South Florida Computer Center Miami, Florida In-House Design and implementation to increase overall Building Survivability for Computer Operations in the event of Commercial and Emergency Power Plant Failures.

Survivability of Building at Project commencement had been clocked as having a 5 Minute window. This was the transfer time to back-up systems and transfer 411 and 911 operations to other Computer Centers within the Bell Network.

Project Goal was to increase window to 10 Minutes by modifying existing Electrical and Mechanical Systems in-place

Window was increased to 15 Minutes at Project Completion

Increase Computer on-time in the event of loss of Electrical Power by utilizing the Chill Water in Building Loop to feed Water Cooled Computers

Synchronize the operations of three, 300 Ton and one, 450 Ton Chiller

Introduce “Intelligence” to the Control System by it being able to analyze the failure of the assembly, recognize the component that failed, search from the other assemblies available for a similar component that would be available, re-configure itself to a complete system and bring itself on-line to assume operation.

Concurrently, alarm to a central location requesting service and identifying the component that failed, while advising what components had been annexed to resume operation

In-House Design for Two Year Program to remove and replace Oversized Inefficient Chillers with specific units matching current Building Cooling Loads. Project Profile;

Southern Bell’s Capital Construction Program of the Seventies Forecasted Building Space and Cooling requirements based on footprints and heat loads of equipment of the Seventies.

Modernization of Telephone Equipment led to higher performing equipment requiring less of a footprint that operated with a lower heat load.

This led to Switching Offices in the Eighties that were 40% occupied, having a heat load of 50 to 70 Tons, having parallel 300 Ton Chillers that were rapid cycling.

This created high maintenance and operating costs of the existing machines

Pay back studies were initiated to equate the justification of Capital Investment to replace the existing Equipment if the expense would pay itself back within Two Years

Program was carried out in Broward, Dade and Monroe Counties.

All work performed without interruption to ongoing Building Operations
