Project Title : Wine grape site suitability assessment for Gauribidanur taluk and web enablement of wine grapes information for south karanataka. Project Abstract : The Geo-spatial technologies has been used for assessing potential wine grape growing sites in the Gauribidanur taluk of Chikballapur district and for web enablement of wine grapes information for south Karnataka. Since overall performance in terms of growth, yield, and quality of grapes for wine making is greatly influenced by climate, location, and soil. The parameters considered for site suitability assessment are rainfall, temperature, soil, etc. out of which sunshine hours and light intensity plays an important role for photosynthesis in wine grapes, which is required for ripening grapes which increases sugar content for quality wine grape production. Study area is also at a suitable altitude of 694m above M.S.L which favours wine grapes cultivation. Suitable weightages are assigned for various parameters based upon their suitability for red wine grape (Cabernet Sauvignon) cultivation and then weighted parameters are integrated. GIS multi-criteria methodology is used to assess highly suitable, moderately suitable, and not suitable areas which are found to be 38,078.5 (17.32%); 65,012.3 (33.66%); and 1,16,782.6 (49.02%) acres respectively of the total geographical area of 2,19,873.4 acres. Web enablement of wine grape varieties and its total acreages grown in south Karnataka (Nandi valley and Cauvery valley), is done using DigiCollect App, open source GIS software QIS, and with web mapping tool Mango maps.
