Denise I. Lauffer – Introduction Letter

Education

For the duration of High School, I divided studies in Architectural drafting @ Wichita South High School & W.A.V.T.S. Wichita Area Vocational Technical School. Receiving both an H.S. & Architectural Design Diploma w/ honors, that a few years later led to work at a startup construction firm called ‘Sunshine Rooms’. When work in this discipline dried up, I worked @ local aircraft & engineering firms. My home town Wichita Kansas, also known as the ‘Air Capitol of the World’ & home to Boeing, Beechcraft, Learjet, Cessna & Piper aircraft co. During my tenure @ Boeing I attended night classes & earned 32 hours towards under graduate studies, with an intro. to Engineering Concepts @ Wichita State University.

Relocating to Iowa, I pursued aa Associates Degree in Architectural Technology @ Kirkwood Community College, won the 2002 playhouse contest. Novak Design firm hired me part time while finishing school & stayed on for 1 year. Graduating with honors from Kirkwood, I made the dean’s list & received my ‘Architectural Design Tech.’ degree. Experience

While working at Beech aircraft; I designed & silkscreened a wide variety of signs, free hand painted lettering & shop

’Light-box posters’ (todays LCD screens), some of my work actually made it to the ‘Paris Airshow’. Sunshine Rooms hired me to do perspective drawings for their prospective clients, illustrating what the proposed sunroom would look like attached to their home. I free hand painted splashy spa pictures on the business storefront. At Boeing I spent 6 yrs. In the Technical Publications group; did wiring diagrams, isometric & exploded part drawings for illustrated Tech manuals. I began working with CAD programs, which led to work in the ‘Engineering Lofting & Design’ department. Here I spent the next six years in a ‘chilly’ early computer environment on elevated floors. We used early CAD ‘Gerber IDS’ & TX95C programs, writing ‘macros’ to define master dimensions for aircraft NC machine work. My remaining 6-yrs @ Boeing in were spent in engineering 777 FWD Fuselage department. I wrote CAD procedural guides & checklist programs for engineering tech assistants. Using ‘Catia’ 3D engineering CAD software, initiated and led effort to redesign the bear strap and mating framework for the 777 #1door. (door you board the aircraft from). Former fabrication scrap rates were 50-75% for the bear-strap, this resulted in a substantial cost savings for part fabrication, time, and material. I gained great personal reward from this project. Where problem solving & redesign efforts were successful. Work @ Novak Design Group led to contract work w/ other local architects … Dave Brost, Greg Sundberg, Dale Solum

& Solum Lang Architects. SLA kept me very busy & eventually asked me to join the firm. I learned to manage various projects, developed project Programs, from Site layout, Schematic design planning thru Construction Administration. Local examples of projects include: Onward Bank & Trust, Echo Hill Presbyterian Church & King of Kings Lutheran Church. The past years brought my love of gardening & Architectural background together providing Landscape designs, for local building contractors & Home owners assisting through Culvers Landscape Design Group. Perspective

I am a task & detail oriented person whose strengths are in master planning & schematic design. I enjoy immersing myself in all aspects of the Arch. project. Program discovery, Design concept, details of the Construction documents thru Constr. administration w/ follow up site visits to verify completion percentages for general contractor pay-apps. In my opinion the site visit is our greatest reward, as the skilled labor & physical materials bring all our efforts to life. It often amazes me how the collaborative effort on large projects produce a final work which exceeds the original design intent. I was fortunate to be a contributing member on the team for Cedar Rapids Central Fire Station. I value every team member’s design opinion in this business, and respect how that enhances the final project outcome. Here again it’s the joy of discovery, and sharing it with those who can appreciate it. It is my hope to gain the same personal reward from my next business venture or employment.
