Experience:
2/2012-Present Colmek Inc., UT
Sr. Mechanical Engineer
Development of a ruggedized 3D under sea array to replace the Navy’s towed sonar array contracted to Colmek by Northrop Grumman. This system was a complete redesign of the original for autonomous torpedo deployment and control. Extreme cooling concerns and vibrational problems needed to be solved for this project. Shipboard high definition displays and joysticks were designed and installed. Solidworks 2017, 2018, ANSYS and Nastran structural and thermal packages used for these designs.
5/2008 - 10/2011 GE Healthcare, Salt Lake City
Lead Mechanical Engineer
Design of C-arm systems and navigational equipment. Responsible for complex electronic packaging issues for next generation imaging equipment. Led a team of 5 engineers to solve issues that included EMI, cooling, and manufacturing concerns. ANSYS Classic was used in the redesign of composite C-arm gantry. Responsible for all testing, verification and validation of designs. Worked very close with FDA on critical changes.
5/2007- 4/2008 Zounds Hearing Inc. Mesa AZ (Contract)
Design of hearing aids and accessories. Micro electro-mechanical packaging included micro thin wall plastic and miniature contact design. Solidworks 2007 was used.
6/2006- 3/2007 Aeroflex Inc. Wichita KS (Contract)
Design electronic packaging for commercial and military avionic test systems. This included the redesign of an encrypted pilot transponder for the F-16 aircraft sub-contracted to Aeroflex by Northrop Grumman. This was an electro-mechanical packaging project with intense thermal, ESD, and military shake and vibrational requirements. Solidworks 2006, Cosmos thermal modeling, and ANSYS structural verifications were used for these designs.
6/2005 – 3/2006 Belkin Corp, Hollywood CA (Contract)
Design of Bluetooth headsets and docking stations for Apple IPOD and NANO. Pro Engineer Wildfire 2 and ISDX surfacing techniques were used in these designs.
1997 – 6/2005 Qualcomm/Kyocera, Inc., Boulder, CO.
Senior Lead Mechanical Engineer / Mechanical Engineering Manager
Design of rack mount systems for Qualcomm’s PBU product. (Pilot Beacon unit)
Responsible for phone plastics design, electronics packaging and testing.
Managed a high level team of multi-disciplined engineers responsible for Qualcomm’s/Kyocera’s phone and accessory developments. Responsible for schedule, staffing concerns, and cost.
Worked to develop a complete mechanical/environmental testing lab facility in Qualcomm’s Boulder office, including fixturing and testing criteria.
Worked extensively with off shore molding houses and contract assembly vendors.
1993 – 1997 Teledyne WaterPik, Fort Collins, CO.
Senior Manufacturing Engineer Manager
Developed and led a $750,000 automated motor bobbin assembly project that resulted in $300,000 per year of scrap and labor savings.
Experienced with class 2 medical device GMP’s and FDA guidelines.
Led a cross functional team of engineers to apply lean principals to many of Teledyne’s product lines increasing efficiencies in many cases by 30 percent, and reducing product cost by an average of 15 percent.
1992 – 1993 Translogic Corporation, Denver, CO.
Electro-Mechanical Product Engineer
Responsible for development of custom conveying and pneumatic tube based material delivery systems.
Responsible for redesign effort for United Airlines cash terminal tube system.
1987 – 1992 Storage Technology Corporation, Louisville, CO.
Mechanical Design Engineer
Developed a ceramic tape guiding system.
Built a finite element model of a tape drive frame assembly in ANSYS and then performed actual drop and vibration tests for comparison.
