oAs an SPTA worked along side with a PTA and treated orthopedic patients who received a hip or knee replacement. We would see all the hip or knee replacement patients a day after their surgery in a group known as Joint Camp. This program starts before a patient has their surgery; they attend a pre-operative class that educates them how to prepare for their surgery. Also worked with patients who received emergency orthopedic surgery due to them being in motor vehicle accidents. I was also able to see patients that were on the med-surge floors that consist of patients that have had falls or other underlying health issues that caused the patient to become weak and required physical therapy.

oWith a Physical Therapist, I observed and produced ideas and exercises for patients with various diagnoses such as chronic back pain, ankle and foot fusions, shoulder pain, patello-femoral syndrome patients and a concussion patient. Also during this clinical affiliation I was able to observe the Physical Therapist perform initial evaluations for new patients.

oWith a Physical Therapist, I observed and helped students diagnosed with various disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome, Lowe’s Syndrome, CDLK5 and other genetic disorders. As a team, the Physical therapist and I were able to come up with different techniques to engage children in achieving their goals through playing with toys, puzzles, riding bikes, roller skating etc. participating in therapy and making it fun by helping them to allow them to enhance their skills and level of function for their daily activities. During my time at this school, I was able to be apart of orthopedic clinic, wheelchair clinic and ankle foot orthotic clinic. This is where the students can be fitted for a wheelchair or a chair that is customized to their needs to be able to participate in classroom learning. Orthopedic pediatric surgeons come down from A. I DuPont to see students that are having orthopedic problems at the school as well as being fitted for foot orthotic if needed.

oObserved PT/PTA’s treating patients with back, shoulder, neck, hand, knee and hip impairments in regaining function of a particular area of their body. I was able to help prepare a cold and hot pack for a few patients.
