Dean Academics (DA)

Primarily responsible for providing instructional leadership for academic curriculum transaction through systemic study and analysis of the teaching-learning process and developing focused plan for improving student achievement; supporting teachers in improving their instructional practice; creating a community of continuous learning for all staff and students.

The sphere of activity of the Dean Academics should spread across the whole length and breadth of the school and NOT confined to senior, middle or junior sections. The vertical reach should be full. The Dean Academics is NOT a senior- senior coordinator looking after timetabling, class arrangements and horizontal academic management. The role is more of a curriculum transaction leader of the school.


The Dean Academics reports to the Vice-Principal and assists her/him in the following tasks:

Developing and implementing of the Annual Plan of School Academic Curriculum.

Schedule classes to teachers through effective time tabling, drawing a judicious balance between scholastic and non-scholastic areas. Supervise and record class room teaching activity of all teachers as per schedule. (This schedule can even be announced earlier).

The Dean Academic should have only a limited academic load (teaching load).This may be in the bracket of 12 -15. This will give time for the Dean Academics to observe a minimum of 12-15 classes per week.

Drafting, designing, editing, timely printing and distribution of school academic calendar, Dairy, publication of advertisements and promotional materials and regular updating of the school’s website.

Forecasting, requisitioning, recruitment, retention, placement and development of manpower.

Ensuring a disciplined and seamless day to day transaction of academic curriculum.

Analysing teaching-learning processes and students’ results through subject wise and teacher wise class observation and feedback mechanisms.

Communicating with parents/guardians on a regular basis through telephone, emails, social media and school website, keeping them posted about their ward’s academic progress and areas of excellence and improvement along with the school’s initiative to that end.

Coordinate and organize Parent-Teacher Meetings at regular intervals. Elicit parents’ valuable suggestions and persuade them to partner with the schools efforts to value add and augment the quality of the schools’ academic life and culture.

Schedule extra classes for weak students and monitor/supervise morning and evening prep classes in hostels/dorms through regular visits to Hostels.

Ensure timely completion of syllabus at all levels.

Coordinate all internal assessments of the school. Review question paper blue prints to ensure duration, type, content and coverage are in compliance with mandatory guidelines of the Board.

Monitor students’ punctuality, attendance and reasons for absence through coordination with House Masters/Mistress.

Organize monthly departmental meetings and collaborate with teachers to vertically and horizontally align the curriculum and instructional practices. Elicit teachers’ feedback/suggestions for improving overall academic quality. Promote collegiality and team building throughout the community.

Organize, coordinate and participate in staff development, subject specific workshops and training programs and ensure implementation of skills learnt in the day to day teaching and classroom handling. Assist in designing and providing professional development based on data analysis and School needs.

Carry out teachers’ suitability report, annual performance appraisal, maintain regular one on one feedback sessions with teachers on a continuous basis so as to help them improve the quality of their teaching, student handling and classroom control skills.

Contribute ideas and inputs in organizing educational tours to ensure academic value added outcomes.

Assist in developing, implementing, and assessing the School Improvement Plan.

Perform any other duties as assigned by the School Management.
