Richard R. Knorr, AIA

President

RKI Companies

Richard Knorr is a master builder, real estate developer, and design architect who has spent the past twenty-five years of his thirty-five-year career building Richard Knorr International, Ltd. (“RKI”) into a turn-key master builder organization with the experience and expertise necessary to deliver comprehensive real estate development services, as well as related hospitality and tourism asset development and management services. Twenty-five years after RKI was created, the firm is now recognized for architectural design excellence, creative real estate programming, and dynamic entrepreneurship. RKI as a master builder organization has focused its efforts on signature, mixed-use and community development, and has evolved its place-making focus with emphasis on environmental stewardship. The firm focuses heavily on the special qualities of a location’s cultural context, and endeavors to capture the spirit of a place and reinforce that essence in the property brands that it creates. RKI is driven by its objective to create profitable, sustainable communities that are ecology minded, and real estate developments that make the world we live in a better place.

Before RKI, Richard spent ten years with the prestigious Chicago based design firm VOA Associates Incorporated (now Stantec), where Richard became the youngest Vice President in the history of the organization. As a Design Principal, Richard led a special projects division of the firm creating and supporting award winning international projects. His work from this time forward has been published in numerous international publications, and has received many awards and citations for design excellence. Richard’s management of VOA’s special projects division led to business endeavors where he gained invaluable experience with real estate development consulting, as well as all aspects of the development programming, design, technical, finance and marketing requirements of real estate development.

As a design partner at VOA, Richard created the design for the tallest mixed- use, Class-A building ever constructed in the Caribbean, the Citibank Tower at the Acropolis Commercial Center located in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Before the construction of the Acropolis began, Richard decided to pursue his unique business model and formed RKI, which was immediately hired to complete the landmark Citibank Tower at the Acropolis Commercial Center, a 1,500,000 square feet project that was the first Class-A mixed-use commercial development in the country, and is today the most successful commercial center and tourist draw in the Dominican Republic. The Acropolis Center is included in Santo Domingo’s significant landmarks tour guidebooks. The success of the Acropolis project led to a number of mixed-use commercial projects both abroad and in the U.S. & the Caribbean. Equipped with an intimate understanding of the Dominican Republic and the CALA Region market Richard founded Roco Ki, a 2,500-acre resort community in Punta Cana that included a signature Nick Faldo Legacy Golf Course rated in 2008 as one of the Top 10 new golf courses in the world by Travel and Leisure and LINKS Magazines. Roco Ki’s record-breaking Founder’s launch program resulted in over USD 140 million in sales, and proved the North American market demand for luxury vacation and second homes in the Dominican Republic – a feat until then, untested or proven.

Richard Knorr’s experiences also include the following examples of built projects: House of Blues Hotel (Chicago), multiple Hyatt Hotels (Orlando and Chicago), Navy Pier Reconstruction (Chicago), James Allen Center (Evanston, IL), Rose Hulman Institute of Technology Sports Complex (Terre Haute, IN), Arie Crown Theater Redesign (Chicago), First Division Museum at Cantigny (Wheaton, IL), and various projects at the McCormick Place Convention Center (Chicago).

Over the years, RKI has also been retained by or partnered with governments and prominent families in Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, Turks and Caicos, Costa Rica, Panama, and the United States to advise and participate in significant destination resort community and mixed- use developments in the CALA Region and the USA. Richard has also assisted third-party development partnerships with conflict mediation, business plan and partnership restructuring, risk mitigation consulting, financial engineering, property repositioning and brand development.

Presently, Richard is busy envisioning a collection of new trend-setting mixed-use developments in Costa Rica, the British Virgin Islands, Saint Martin, and Mexico that explore new standards in sustainable ESG design and operations that promise rarified exotic environs to live, work and play.

Richard is a US Coastguard certified captain (50-Ton) with over 40,000 miles of blue and freshwater sailing experience and enjoys sail racing on the Great Lakes with over 10 Chicago- Mackinac races logged, as well as significant long-distance cruising in the Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean. As an outdoor enthusiast and keen culturist, Richard enjoys the natural environment and exploring new cultures and places. He is a leader that deeply enjoys team collaboration, and helping others around him to achieve their own excellence and special purpose.
