Living Goods Uganda 2/8/2021 – Today Community Health Supervisor Overview of role
As part of the Community Health Management Team, I support Community Health Workers (CHWs) in Masaka District to deliver high quality health care to their communities through providing continuous mentorship and training through supervision and executing branch operations in line with Living Goods policies and procedures to ensure health impacts in their communities in a sustainable way.
Responsibilities
Effectively mobilized 56 VHTs to participate in quarterly VHT refresher trainings and monthly peer leaders training. This helped to sharpen their skills in delivering health impact in 73 villages. Mobilized peer leaders to attend all peer leader’s meetings without fail and supported the peer leaders' trainings through motivation, discussing solutions to challenges in the field, assessing performance of peer groups and preparing transport refund. This helped to improve on peer supervision to 100%.
Conducted monthly field spot checks to identify areas where VHTs needed training. Through peer group meetings I conducted coaching sessions after analyzing VHT performance reports to identify training needs. This resulted in sustained good performance in household coverage, U1 and U5 assessments, number of women visited for family planning services, Treatments, CYPs, PNC, immunization targets, 100% data quality.
Mobilized 56 VHTs to fully participate in the family planning assessments done by the family planning focal persons. This increased the recognition of VHTs by the health facility staff and now they are getting short term methods such as Sayana, COCs and POP and dewormers from the health facilities.
Through developing and following workplans to ensure effective supervision, I identified capacity needs of weak VHTs and addressed them through mentorship and coaching by conducting field visits, sms, phone calls to agree actions and tagging weak performers with high performers. Effective and clear communication of organization policies to VHTs during group meetings and trainings. This helped to explain about the no sales policy, data quality policy and the compensation experiment and how VHTs benefit from them. I addressed concerns and misconceptions, equipped VHTs with information to share with clients hence motivating VHTs and ensuring less than 10% attrition.
I identified and resolved VHT delivery program bottlenecks such as falsifying data, limited stock such as family planning commodities and dewormers, VHTs not prioritizing LG work and tech issues. This ensured sustained performance by VHTs in delivering health impact. Through introducing VHTs to health facilities, joint support visits with health assistants, reviewing VHT reporting with health facility in-charges, tracking the utilization of the LG file at the health facilities and tracking the utilization of LG referral books, I ensured that VHTs report to both LG and respective health facilities. This resulted into the adoption of 56/56 LG VHTs by the health facilities of Budadiri HC IV, Bulwala HC III, Buyobo HC III, Mutufu HC III and Bumulisha HCIII. I created and submitted monthly work plans by 30th of the previous month and accounted for all provided float by the 25th of the month ensuring accountability for funds received I broke down performance reports after analysis and disseminated them to VHT groups using WhatsApp. These reports guided group discussions about performance by showing evidence of areas that needed improvement resulting into sustained good performance. I also mobilized VHTs to support Budadiri HC IV, Buyobo HC III, Bumulisha HC III, and Mutufu HC III in the community events which strengthened the relationship between LG and the health facilities. By conducting field visits, calls and SMS to ensure that VHTs synch their work on time. I prepared timely interventions to address weak areas, track medicine utilization and also ensure timely payment of VHT incentives.
I conducted field visits with the peer groups to do data quality spot checks door to door, interviewed clients to assess the quality of the service delivered and conducted hands on training on gaps identified in the weekly reports. This ensured that VHTs observe set service quality standards. I ensured timely delivery of health facilities (3rd of the month) and followed up with the health Information assistants to ensure LG reports are entered. This resulted into an increase from 11% to 83% of health facilities integrating LG reports into their quarterly reports in DHIS2 I supported monthly VHT compensation through ensuring timely synching of phones to enable computation of incentives, verifying VHT details, sharing timely feedback in case of discrepancies, explaining VHT compensation structure during peer leaders meeting and in-service trainings and following up VHTs to ensure they are paid. This motivated VHTs. I ensured that VHTs always have stock through last mile delivery which ensured good performance. Skills developed
