Research Approach

Our main goal is to deepen knowledge of the ways in which plants respond to the environment in terms of different traits (genetic, physiological, anatomical, and morphological). We look at different modes of response such as phenotypic plasticity, the capacity of an organism to change in morphology and physiology in response to environmental signals, and genetic mechanisms as revealed in common garden experiments. The techniques we have used are carbon processing (photosynthesis, spectral reflectance, chlorophyll fluorescence, etc), water relations, and growth analysis.

Dr Nautiyal’s current research includes morphological, anatomical, physiological, and optical properties of plants in relation to climate change and ecology. The individual species and their adaptations to the environment, plant nutrition, establishment of germplasm banks of commercially important tree species and biodiversity conservation.

Planting stock improvement and propagation of commercially important tree species and Bamboos for higher biomass production to meet the fuel wood, fodder, small timber demands of farmers and local people as well as to enhance the income of the rural poor’s through forestry is another area of success of Dr. Nautiyal . He is also promoting Bamboo species for faster carbon assimilation, reclamation of stress sites and for socioeconomic upliftment of rural poor.

Bioenergy through promoting energy plantations.
