"When you refuse to be ordinary,
generations will be affected and your life exceptional because of your tenacity to be extraordinary and make your mark" ~ T. D. Jakes Dr. G.L Mutumi is a wildlife biologist with many interests. He brings with him a set of field skills honed in a variety of settings. He has assessed and sampled waterbird, bat, insects, am- phibians, special status plants, and wetlands (fresh water and marine), various habitats in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Madagascar, Belize, and many parts of the United States (Massachusetts, and California).
He has been with the environmental consulting industry in the United States for three years, beginning in March 2021. He has assessed and monitored habitat, wetland, and water quali- ty, as well as construction activities in sensitive areas - areas with a combination of waters, wetlands, nesting birds, and Special Status Flora and Fauna. HIGHLIGHTS
For the three years he served USA’s environmental consulting industry, he was engaged for 80% of the time (5 days a week) ~ 121 weeks ~ 601 days. He has completed approximately 5 400 hours of consulting at an average of 8 hours per day. Approximately half of the time were pure nesting bird surveys, 10% to ‘Master Special Use Permitted’ (MSUP) nesting bird surveys, 5% to MSUP nesting bird surveys and monitoring, 20% to vegetation management monitoring and surveys, and 10% to construction monitoring - pole replacement. Meandering walks were taken within 150ft radius of powerline poles were carried out. These walks implemented visual surveys with the aid of a 10 X 42 binoculars. Also surveys were done along the hike paths to the poles and along skid paths pre-approved for Overland travel. Continuous monitoring was done throughout the construction activity. 5 Nov 2021: Field Practical: Introduction to Desert Tortoises and Field Techniques, Desert Tortoise Council, Ridgecrest CA, 8 Hours And 29 - 30 Oct 2021 Virtual Workshop 5 Hours Agent And Contact Details

Practical surveys were carried out along 1 mile transects - with the aid of a 10 X 42 binoculars to observe a distance of 50 ft on either side of the transects. Using tortoises in captivity, health assessment, sexing and aging was practiced. Yes ~ 25 DETO individuals observed throughout project experience, 5 individuals handled, tortoise eggs, 1 juvenile, 1 sub- adult, 3 adults; 1 male and 2 female.
- Virtual Workshop General tortoise biology was discussed, and specific ecology to desert tortoises was learnt. Discussions were held with Desert Tortoise special- ists from the desert council.

Shadowed Graham Biddy and Rachel Lopez monitoring the digging crew. Sensitive areas with Yosemite toad burrows were marked and avoided, land travel was restricted to paths without vegetation, debris was collected after activities (16 hours).
Habitat Assessment and Construction Monitoring for Yosemite Toad and Bolander’s Wood Reed, Shaver Lake, August 31, 2021. Shadowed Elias Elias for monitoring line and pole replacement crew. Sensitive areas with burrows were marked and avoided, land travel was restricted to paths without vegetation, debris was collected after activities (9 hours). Also, shadowed Dan Shrimsher monitoring the digging crew. Sensitive areas with burrows were marked and avoided, land travel was restricted to paths without vegetation, debris was col- lected after activities (4 hours). Performed habitat assessment and con- struction monitoring for Yosemite toad. Nesting Bird Surveys & Field Training Experience, SummitWest for SCE, May 2021. Shadowed SummitWest field staff during nesting bird surveys for SCE. Focused on learning how to read Job Packages, Collector, Survey123, Field Maps, Solocator App and location-tracking GIS apps. Shadowed during nesting bird surveys, to learn what to look for as well as how to map and report positive findings. Also shadowed staff during sensitive species pre-constructions surveys, understanding what deliverables are and timelines for reporting via text message, emails and submitting survey results via Survey123 or Field Maps. Global avian influenza network surveillance. Field Biolo- gist, 2008 to 2010.
Four countries were visited for fieldwork documenting waterbirds
– numbers and species identity. These were sampled for avian influenza through capture- release methods. Wetlands where these birds occurred were assessed in terms of their ecological health. Water samples were also analyzed for pollutants and oxy- gen content. A total of 8000 birds were sampled through this pro- ject. Within this sample, Dr GL Mutumi ringed a total of 150 differ- ent species of birds ranging from waterbirds to fully-terrestrial. He co-managed the programme alongside Dr Mduduzi Ndlovu and Prof Graeme Cumming.

Data on the sampled species was organized and captured into a Microsoft assess database, queries were programmed to carryout population density analyses and species distribution maps. A game-park located in Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe was the location for this work. Several species of animals were man- aged including Zebras, Giraffes, and Crocodiles. Activities included feeding, tick treatment, and animal translocations. Environment education was also extended to the local schools and surrounding community.
