The emphasis in a graduate nurse practitioner program is to develop the clinical and professional expertise necessary to provide comprehensive primary care and specialty care in a diverse patient population. As a nurse practitioner I feel that I belong to a group of elite advanced practice nurses who hold the distinction of being considered to have the advanced skills necessary to expand nursing practice in practical, theoretical, and research-based competencies. This enables me to provide comprehensive and cost-efficient care to my patients as well as my community. My career goals for the next few years are to continue to further my education and obtain my doctorate degree as a nurse practitioner.
I also feel that since I have combined the nurse educator role with the nurse practitioner role, this has served to strengthen my skills in the role of educator, counselor, patient advocate, manager, mentor, and researcher. Teaching is one of the most rewarding careers that I can think of besides the one that I have been involved in for the past two decades, which is that of nursing. Being able to combine these disciplines allows me the opportunity to do both things of which I am most passionate.

This practicum experience allowed me the opportunity to work with geriatric as well as adult patients in an office setting. During this practicum experience I was able to diagnose, treat, and manage patients with acute and chronic disease processes (e.g. diabetes, hypertension, upper respiratory infections, influenza, etc.), obtain the medical history and perform physical examinations. I was also given the opportunity to order and interpret data and diagnostic studies (e.g. routine lab test, EKGs, ultrasound/CT reports), and make recommendations for pharmacological therapy, physical therapy, rehabilitative therapies, and referrals to other healthcare providers when necessary. Another opportunity that I was given during this experience was to provide counseling and education to patients and their families about health behaviors, making healthy choices, self-care skills, and treatment options. One way that I was able to do this was to present an educational health promotion PowerPoint about urinary tract infections to a group of patients who agreed to view the material. After viewing the material, the patients were asked to fill out a short survey asking questions about the content and the delivery (readability) of the PowerPoint. The survey indicated that the material was thought to be useful, easy to understand, and most of the patients indicated that they would like to receive more healthcare educational opportunities in the future such as this one.

My practicum experience in the emergency department allowed me the opportunity to work with the MD and the NP treating a variety of patients including both pediatric and adult populations with varied levels of acuity. This included treating patients with urgent primary care needs, acute and critical illnesses as well as those with accidental injuries or trauma. I was able to assess the patient, come up with a differential diagnosis, order appropriate labs or diagnostic tests, and recommend treatment options. I also was given the opportunity to perform my first pelvic examination, perform an I & D of several wounds, and suture a deep wound laceration of an arm.

Responsibilities of a circulating nurse:
Pre-surgical duties: Ensure that all necessary equipment and instruments are readily available; assist the surgical team in scrubbing and donning sterile gowns and gloves, opening supplies and maintenance of the surgical field, counting and recording all instruments, needles and sponges. 2.) Assessment: Prior to the start of the procedure, circulating nurses evaluate the condition of the patient, including vital signs, responsiveness to medications given in pre-op, provide warm blankets for prevention of hyperthermia, and application of anti-embolic stockings and devices.
Intraoperative duties; assisting the CRNA with the induction of anesthesia, positioning and maintenance of proper body alignment, insertion of urinary catheters, monitoring the condition of the patient, monitoring the needs of the surgical team, gathering and opening of additional equipment and supplies, filling out surgical department patient records, and charging for the appropriate supplies used during the procedure.
Post-op duties; Inventories all instruments, sponge and needles by counting them with the surgical tech, collection, labeling and transporting any specimens, transporting the patient to the PACU, giving a detailed report to the post anesthesia care nurse.
Responsibilities of a Scrub Tech:
Duties include; setting-up and preparation of the operating room, maintenance of the sterile field, taking inventory of surgical instruments, needles, and sponges by counting them with other members of the OR nursing staff, passing instruments and supplies to the surgeon and first assistant, cutting suture, holding retractors for tissue exposure, operating the telescope in laparoscopic procedures, application of sterile dressings.
Other duties include; transporting patients to and from the operating room and assisting the nursing staff with the maintenance of equipment, surgical instruments and updating surgeon preference cards.

Nursing Philosophy
Caring is at the center of the nursing profession. When we treat others with dignity, compassion, kindness, and respect regardless of their social or economic status, personal attributes, race/ethnicity, sexual identity, political affiliation, religion, or the nature of their health problems, only then we can truly call ourselves patient advocates. Without caring it is impossible for nurses to connect with their patients. If no connection is made trust cannot be developed, thus a trusting therapeutic relationship will not take place.
Another important aspect of caring for the patient is the promotion of health and safety, and protection of the patient's rights. Being an advocate for the patient, it is important that the advanced practice nurse can use the technologies available to provide the patient with comprehensive, quality, and cost-efficient healthcare. In order to do this the nurse must have expert knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the human body, as well as an understanding of disease pathology, and the interpretation of diagnostic test results. The advanced practice nurse must also be up to date on current treatments and pharmacological therapy.
Personally, I enjoy being a nurse because I want to be able to help others, give back to my community, and show my patients that I care about them by being able to develop a trusting and therapeutic relationship. As I continue to advance my career in the nursing profession, I hope that I continue to develop these qualities and that I can provide quality healthcare that is consistent with the values of professional nursing.
