State of Utah (Juvenile Court)

Juvenile Probation Supervisor, Senior Probation Officer Salt Lake County,Utah

As a Probation Officer my targeted goals are to build an effective evidence-based rapport with the youth that I supervise in an effort to adequately reduce recidivism, provide community protection, impose interventions/sanctions, and to equip said youth with the required services to live productively and responsibly in the community. My caseload involves all types of youth that have committed offenses ranging from assault(s), gang related offense(s), sex offense(s), murder, destruction of property, theft(s), and drug/alcohol offense(s). All cases are handled on an individual basis in order to come up with the appropriate intervention/sanction that will help in reducing recidivism. Other Duties: Provide supervision by utilizing the Targeted Response Model and Case Planning Model, initiate warrants, OSC’s (Order to Show Cause), discuss orders/directives with the youth’s parents/guardians, conduct interviews, and complete/present court reports to the presiding Judge. In addition, all court reports are legally sufficient. I am also familiar with all court proceedings, criminal law, criminal citations and how to generate accurate assessments that give the court an appropriate risk level on the youth and how probation will be addressing the dynamic risk factors.

Additional Duties: I also deal with restitution for victim(s); I assist in recovery of financial loss and provide an opportunity to have their voices heard on the matter(s). Most cases result in a Restitution Hearing; where I am responsible for supplying the Court with all the appropriate documentation indicating monetary loss or property loss. At times my job deals with custody disputes and parental arguments. I use mediation techniques as a way to guide all disputes to a productive resolution. During my time as a probation officer I have progressed from an entry level officer to a senior probation officer status. I maintain accurate reports, documents, and am able to gain rapport with my clients and their parent(s)/guardian(s). I also continue to conduct detention/jail transports, assist with law enforcement, and maintain a clean driving record. I conduct escorts with personnel that are either detained or work-related. In addition, I am the point of contact for local law enforcement (West Jordan PD/Sandy PD, and Unified PD) agencies in regards to juvenile offenders. Cultural Diversity is paramount in this line of work and I have continued to strive to appreciate, respect, and understand the different cultures I am immersed with on a day to day basis.
