I have been disabled for years, living in the Dominican Republic off and on. finally I have a proper diagnosis and proper treatment and so I would like to get back to work, some where I can learn and grow.
I served the mentally challenged from the time I was 19 until my early thirties, In many different rolls. I started at 19 being a direct support staff for individuals with special needs. I transported individuals to and from day program, ran programs written for the individuals to learn and grow in knowledge in order to care for selves. I later ran a 12-bed home as the weekend manager staying on the premises from Thursday evening until Sunday evening. In that house I managed banking for the individuals, programing, food shopping, food preparation for meals,ALDs,recreation for the weekend as well as dispense medication.
I worked in Saranac Lake for the ARC for four years at an ICF with 12 beds, I was the weekend manager. my responsibilities included, banking, writing and running programs with the individuals for ADLs,Schedule recreational outings and dispensed medication. I think I am a great fit for a peer support because I was in need and Family’s First came in and gave my family and I the tools we needed to not only to grow in information, but communication, in our family as well as the school and community. I am an individual who is in the process of adopting two children with special needs, they have been with me for ten years. my situation helps me to have empathy and understand as well as compassion for those I would be serving.
