Objective
To secure a position that takes advantage of my extensive photography, sales and management experience. I am disables but recovered from a kidney transplant (2.7 years ago) Having a job where I can move and sit both is best for me. My mind is sharper than it has been in years and I believe I would be an asset to any team.
Experience
Having received a degree in Studio Art from University of California at Riverside and, recently, a Professional Certificate in Digital Photography from UC San Diego, I am eager to share the knowledge I have gained over my career as a working photographer. I have over 35 years of multi-faceted experiences in photography; studio, art, gallery, museum, commercial, press, curating, sales, promotions and education. The variety of proficiency I have in these fields has led me to a wider understanding of photography as an art and science. Managing studio and retail photographic establishments, I have mentored and trained others in this field. I have worked as a journalist both as a writer and photographer and lent my expertise at the California Museum of Photography (UCR/CMP) twice, once in 1981-82 as an intern and in 2010, as a volunteer. Most recently I interned in the Development Department of The Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA).
SELECTED VOCATIONAL EXPERIENCE
ProBuild McCall ID 2013-2014
Moving to Idaho I found a place to work that helped me afford medical insurance for my family and use my sales skills to help increase sales in the company during my year there. They were aware that I have a disability and after time I couldn’t accommodate my needs.
photopsj - photographer 1990 - present
My company has had a wide range of photographic experiences. In addition to shooting and editing, numerous weddings, portraits, and events, I have represented over 100 bands seeking label representation, as well documenting the opening of Experience Music Project. Commercial clients have included Chicago Title, Musician’s Photo Service, Metro Corporation, Live Wire, Perma-Chink Incorporated, Gardenside Products, Bayliner, The Mason’s and Boeing.
Clear Image Studio – Manager/Photographer 1997 – 2000
I took over Marysville Portrait Studio under the agreement that I would create a viable photography studio within one year or I would move on. The owner had successfully operated three one-hour photo labs, but his portrait studio was floundering. Under my direction, the studio was reinvented, reorganized and expanded to include a larger commercial base. By creating a new image, training and educating photographers and office staff, the studio was renamed and flourished. The opening of a second studio in Lynwood, Washington, gave me the opportunity to design and build all aspects of the portrait studio from the ground up.
Arlington Times – Sportswriter/Photographer 1982 – 1984 Marysville Globe – Graphic Designer 1995 -1997
As a writer and photographer for these weekly newspapers, I covered civic, political and sporting events. I did all of my own layout work and prepared all photographs for the publications. Often I was self-edited, in that I wrote my own assignments and brought them to the weekly editorial meetings.
Kits Cameras Inc. – Multiple Store Manager 1982 - 1995
During my tenure, I managed, reorganized, and opened multiple locations of camera stores as the company grew from 18 to over 150 stores. I hired and trained numerous employees with many of them moving on to managerial positions of their own. Training involved all aspects of customer service, photography equipment, lab operation and the introduction of video and digital photography to the general public.
A Chronological listing of work experience is in the master application is available upon request.
Education
University of California, San Diego. 7-2011 to 9-2012
Professional Certificate in Digital Photography. UCSD’s Extension program certificate has educated me in the latest technology in photography.
University of California, Riverside. BA, Studio Art 9-1978 to 6-1982
Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art with an emphasis in Photography. UCR’s Studio Art department was in its infancy at this time. Time has proved that the concepts and vision of this program has shaped photography education. The program assured that students became skilled in both technical and artistic aspects of photography and art. As a Teaching Assistant, I not only supported instructors practically, but also assisted in educating and coaching students. I was the first undergraduate intern at the California Museum of Photography, an experience that has assisted me in all my professional endeavors.
Skills
From both a technical and artistic standpoint, I am highly skilled in all aspects of traditional photography and have a great understanding of video and digital imaging. With a high aptitude for learning new products and techniques my computer skills have greatly as I have used newer technologies. My recent certification from UCSD’s Extension program has given me the opportunity to develop expertise in the latest techniques including compositing, stitching, color management, web-sharing protocol, Adobe Creative Suite and Final Cut Pro programs. My management skills allow me to organize businesses in a way that is easy for others to follow. I have handled budgets up to $3,000,000 a year maintaining tight inventory controls. Through my coaching I can educate staff and clients in photography, where others have failed. My work at The California Museum of Photography has given me skills and knowledge of both historical and modern art photography, accessioning, archiving and cataloging. I was also given the opportunity to curate the show “Old School” based on my time as a student at UCR. For the past two years I have volunteered teaching art through the Art Docent program at Pine Valley Elementary School.
