Caregiver – Companion July 2014 – September 2016

Companion of Adult Male with Agoraphobia Condition, Client’s Condominium Home – Pasadena, CA

Every time meeting with client and before starting the companion work, we ensured we went over the routine or care planning for the day. For the day’s scheduled routing, the client addressed specific instructions followed by me.

As personal errand-runner, I was instructed to pick-up the client’s mail, medication(s) orders, and going grocery shopping. I also took his cars to get serviced and obtained their smog checks.

Assisted with meals and nutrition. I would meal prep for the client. I heated up client’s food, served his meals on a plate, and placed meals within easy reaching access. I made sure the client had all the needed utensils. I constantly checked to see if he needed help. Additionally, I regularly cut food to make it easier for the client to eat and enjoy his meals.

Supported client with mobility. Ensuring safe movement, both inside and outside the client’s home. Assisted him in properly going inside my car.

Assisted the client by utilizing adequate techniques to help support his body weight as he exited my car to prevent any injury.

Transported client during elections to specific voting polls and sites. Also transported him to the bank and needed medical appointments. Usually transported him to primary physician, psychiatrists, and therapists’ office locations. There were a few times when he needed to be transported to his dentist’s office too.

Assisted client with medical advocacy helping him to communicate with his healthcare providers to obtain important information.

Assisted client with medication prompting. I would ask him if he had taken or was, he going to take his medications and reminding him of the time. My client knew what medicines to take and how to take them but needed to be reminded when it was time for him to take them.

Provided companionship services to client. I feel my companionship caused a positive difference to his life. It produced the client to start having a sort of purpose. My companionship also provided the client with a feeling of safeness and a sense of friendship. These feeling of safeness and sense of friendship helped the client to improve his mental health and wellbeing.

The client made it habitually for him and me to watch television. Since the client decided to have both of us watch television as part of our regular scheduled routine, it made us develop a bonding relationship. This bonding aided me in building great rapport with the client as I was able to help him feel less lonely, depressed, and anxious.

Moreover, every time, I served the client his meals or we watched television we were obligated to communicate with one another. The communication which took place during the time we watched T.V. or while I served his meals facilitated an improvement to his behavioral and social condition.

As a caregiver or companion, one’s attitude is extremely important to note. The client appreciated the companionship and chillness I transmitted yet also conveyed a confident presence. There were occasions where the client stated he appreciated my chillness and being layback inside his home.

Similarly, he said he appreciated my demeanor of confidence, being responsible, and an excellent car driver whenever I transported him to the places he needed to be. He was very thankful that I would accompany him into the bank, go inside with him to his primary physician’s office and inside his therapist’s office as well as his psychiatrist’s office.

Although, reporting and monitoring the client and his special needs were not in my job’s responsibilities, nevertheless, I documented and wrote short reports for personal use and support.

During any given shift, I would write notes in a personal notebook I usually carried on days I met with the client. I would take note(s) when I noticed something impactful or something the client had an opportunity for improvement. For example, I noticed the client becoming less socially awkward and more frequently displaying a reaction of happiness. Afterwards, once getting home or the following day, based on my written notes, I would type up a short report to help me make the best recommendations to the client. However, the short reports were to merely help enhance the companionship services I personally provided.

At the end of each companionship day, I was instructed to complete the client’s home maintenance and housekeeping. The instructed duties were composed of thoroughly cleaning the kitchen and assuring that all dirty dishes were completely washed and dried-up. There were certain occurrences, where I found myself having to use a toilet plunger to fix my client’s clogged toilet. A couple of times, I also changed a burned lightbulb from one of the client’s condominium bedrooms and kitchen. Tutor September 2010 – June 2014
