February 2017 - September 2017
Peace Corps Volunteer: with the Community Health Improvement Project (CHIP)/Training and Education Program
USA PC – Southern Provence, Choma, Zambia – April 2016 to February 2017
Mentor/co-facilitator/leader/co-planner/trainer/co-learner: Rural community health projects, in collaboration w a local rural clinic/outpost, preventative health education/TOT (Training of Trainers-adult education) and peer educators/peer counseling programs, HIV and malaria education, diagnosis and care, maternal and child health and nutrition, reproductive health education and services, water sanitation and disease prevention, agriculture/farming, income generating activities, girls and boys clubs, girl empowerment camps, gender based violence education and awareness, HIV support groups and national recognition projects, and training in grant writing. Also collaborated on many non-health related projects such as building toilets, hand-washing stations, subsistence perma-gardening, and general village/hut/bicycle maintenance.
PC puts volunteers through 3 months of pre-service training (while we live with a host family) to not only learn about the healthcare system and medical needs of the country and communities here, but also about the psychology and work necessary to achieve behavior change and motivation, interacting/communicating with traditional local leaders, cultural sensitivity, cross culture training, and language, cooking, and technological trainings. We also go through many intra-service trainings throughout service, and are taught how to give presentations, do community-needs analysis, and give heath talks all in local language. Our goal is to completely integrate into our villages, and assist and motivate the community using locally available resources and sustainable capacity building programs. PC does not approve or believe in programs that can’t carry on once the volunteer leaves at the close of service. Sustainability is 1st.
