Description:

I was required to do standby and call-out duties on alternate weeks, although I

actually needed to be available on a 24 -hour basis at any given time to assist in case

of emergency. I assisted the D.S to control a budget of R6 million to manage and

maintain a district consisting of 160 km of pipelines (from 380mm to 2 600mm in

diameter) - supplying industries and households in three Municipalities: Emfuleni

(Vereeniging / Vanderbijlpark), Metsimaholo (Sasolburg) and Ngwathe (Heilbron).

With a staff compliment of 32, I operated, managed and maintained a Booster Pump

Station with a Dosing Plant to control the water quality, a Water Purification Plant that

supplied potable water to our depot that consists of a block of single quarters, 20

houses, police station, a school and the surrounding informal settlements. I also

assisted in maintaining a Sewage Plant that served the above -mentioned community

and was responsible for the maintenance of all buildings, including our hostel

facilities which consisted of a kitchen, ablution block and single accommodation for

20 persons.

I planned, supervised and assisted all scheduled maintenance and inspection

performed in said District, as well as repairs inspections, installations, breakdowns

and other work performed by Internal / external Vendors and contractors. I managed

the satellite stores which comprised our cleaning materials, spares and other

equipment and machinery. I controlled the fleet consisting of 3 vehicles, a tractor

and several tractor-mowers.

Quality of work, output, deadlines and the development of the staff and myself were a

big priority. Safety, Health and Environmental issues are foremost in everything I do.

I am proud to say that my and the staffs input contributed towards Rand Water

achieving ISO 9001/2 as well as ISO 14001 certification, as the Depot was one of

those selected for the final inspection by the SABS and we passed the audit with

flying colors.
