My job search was interrupted for 4 weeks because I was offered a permanent inpatient job at Rockland Psychiatric Center, which I accepted and was in the process of being credentialed. Due to the higher risk of serious violent behavior from the inpatient population, given my age, I reconsidered and turned down this job offer. I restarted my job search January 2024.

My primary role was treating patients on geriatric psychiatry inpatient. I was the hospital’s consultation-liaison psychiatrist. I managed the entire unit case load of 14 patients two days per week, as well as managed 6 to 8 patients on the other three weekdays. The patient population were nursing home residents suffering from several types of dementia, and a smaller number of patients with Schizophrenia, primary mood disorders referred from supportive housing. The vast majority of my patient case load had comorbid medical conditions which I managed with the assistance of a consulting Internist. This was a Locums Tenens job which ended prematurely because the geriatric unit was closed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

I evaluated and treated a Hispanic patient population at the South Bronx clinic, many of whom spoke little or no English. I was able meet their language and cultural needs with my fluency in Spanish and previous experience treating outpatients with similar cultural needs At the Harlem clinic, I treated more of a diverse patient population. Most patients had a mood disorder as their primary diagnosis. A high percentage had comorbid substance use disorders ranging from in remission to active use.

New York Presbyterian Hospital – Cornell Campus, NIMH Fellowship in Clinical Geriatric Psychiatry July 1992 to June 1993
The fellowship was funded by the NIMH and designed by the Division Chief, George Alexopoulos, a national and internationally renowned researcher on the psychobiology of geriatric mood disorders and on effectiveness and services research.
Although the fellowship concentrated on training psychiatrists for clinical geriatric psychiatry, under the supervision of Robert C Young, MD Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry,, due to my interest in antipsychotic plasma levels, I was able to complete two research projects on the effect of age of the pharmacokinetics of Haloperidol and a second study of the effect of age on pharmacokinetics of Fluphenazine.
