EEX 4070: Integrating Exceptional Students in General Education Settings This course is a broad introduction to exceptionality, at-risk, and diverse student populations with a particular emphasis on the educational aspects in the field of special education. It is designed to provide general educators and others with basic information about integrating students with special needs into general education classrooms. Strategies for working with students in general education settings and for identifying and referring students when they cannot succeed in the classroom are included. Particular attention is given to strategies for individualizing instruction, classroom organization, and behavior management in inclusive settings. This course is required by the state of Florida for certification in all areas of elementary education, secondary education, and exceptional student education. EDA 6106: Administrative Analysis and Change
This required course for students enrolled in the DELPS Master of Education (M.Ed.) program in educational leadership uses research on appreciative inquiry, organizational change and leadership and organizational learning, capacity building, distributed leadership, and implementation science to consider how to build professional learning communities that use teacher leaders to extend the expertise of the school faculty to serve all students appropriately. Students in this course are required to critically analyze change processes in their own educational settings as well as other educational settings in order to create implementation plans of evidence-based practices.
EEX 4742: Narrative Perspectives on Exceptionality: Cultural and Ethical Issues This writing-intensive course focuses on student interpretation of exceptionalities through the personal narratives and perspectives of individuals with exceptionalities, their families, and those who play an educational role in their lives. These perspectives are used heuristically to examine the role of ethics and values in decisions made (by/for) individuals with exceptionalities. An overarching goal of the course is the development of critical thinking and reflection skills among students. PUBLICATIONS
