Work Experience
Special Education Science Teacher
Shrub Oak International School-Mohegan Lake, NY
September 2017 to Present
I started as a part time science teacher in a newly opened special education school with 7 students with Autism. Gradually the school's enrollment went up, after three months I became full time. I worked under great supervision and collaboration with 5 other teachers. I was able to design all branches of science curriculum for the school in my first year there. The teaching was done according to the student interest, each student had their own lesson. Students to staff ratio was 2:1, there were students with 1:1 assistance. Gradually the school grew, and classes grew in number. I taught Skills and Achievement groups and Diploma groups. After great efforts and connecting with students individually, I was able to work on hands on projects as groups in all Diploma classes and most of the S&A classes. I teach all branches of sciences as per student's need and requirement. I also work with gifted elementary students individually, co-worked with elementary classroom teachers to guide and also help out with the collaborative work. Currently working with the first group of middle school co-hort exploring science. I love working with these diverse groups, that keeps my interest and creativity alive. I have also worked alongside other subject teachers like history, math, collaborative class periods. We planned together and included both subject areas to teach students in small groups. STEM programs for Summer, like inventors, space, building activities, nature exploration etc. School also had a farm where we hatched chicken and looked after them. We still have two chicken coops. Students grew vegetables and fruits and did research work in the farm. High School Science Teacher

I also taught small groups Forensics, psychology and science topics class. During that short period, I had students accepted to NYU & Colombia, who did very well in their AP exams in Biology, Physics and Chemistry in my classes.

Additional Information
To whom it may concern
I am a highly motivated result focused individual with 35 years of successful education career in very different environments. Most of my career, I tried to focus on ways that I can motivate my students to be better & create interests in subject matter. To achieve these goals sometimes I tried to find my own unique ways.
I started my career as an English teacher (ESL) in Sri Lanka and then had an opportunity to teach as a Chemistry teacher in a High School in Colombo, Sri Lanka. In the United States I did teach Montessori, preschool and Middle school students for sometimes. Currently I am teaching in a theraputic school in Mohegan Lake, NY.Before that I taught in, one other theraputic school, an IB boarding school
(mostly international) with High School students, where I taught as an IB/ IGCSE Chemistry teacher, in EF,Thornwood, New York. I am hoping to broaden my horizons to have a better experience with an interesting and different set up, as well as, to find a better fit for me to further my career. I like to lead students and to participate in constructive programs. I already have achieved this in my life before, working with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, in Mt Kisco and all schools I worked so far. If I find the right school I will be able to do it again and that will give me a chance to achieve the goal in my life which is to be a great Science Teacher. Hopefully in return many more students also will benefit from my teaching methods and make their dreams come true. Also I believe in schools that students can get familiar with the staff and staff that can relate to all students they touch. In my belief that will give students an opportunity to get closer to teachers. This eventually can benefit both teacher & the student. In addition, I have artistic & computer skills that will be useful for class & school projects. I also have attached my resume for your review. I would give names of referees if you would like to consider. Thank you for considering my application. I would appreciate the opportunity to interview and look forward to hearing from you in the near future. Sincerely,
Anusha Shiromi De Silva.
