B-Plant Shift-Support Manager – Hanford, Washington

1. Direct supervision of nine bargaining unit employees on a rotating A, B, C, D shift schedule.

a. Nuclear Process Operators – Perform nuclear process operations separating Cesium and Strontium from the F-18 waste stream off the PUREX Plutonium / Uranium separation process by resin loading and adhesion, Glove Box operations to include automatic welding and then the transferring of capsules of ~40,000 curies of Cesium Chloride from the cell to underwater storage, Surveillances of process operations and equipment, Distillation of pure water for process makeup, Sampling of process operations and retention pond, Sample truck deliveries to the laboratory, Housekeeping and decontamination work, and Training.

b.Radiation Control Technologist – Survey samples for delivery, air sample monitoring, survey operators out of radiation zones, and RWP logbook supervision.

c.Power Operator – Electrical, steam, instrument air, cooling water and temperature controls.

d.Crane Operator – Opening process cells by moving enormous concrete cover-blocks, installing jumpers, moving and opening radioactive shipment casks, putting contaminated equipment and materials in radioactive waste containers, and delicate removal of waste box container from process cell. during Fission Products Processing operations.

2.Observation of the Waste Encapsulation and Storage Facility (WESF) as supervisor training.

Technical Trainer – Hanford, Washington

1.Develop training materials including tests and provide the training to certify Nuclear Process Operators, Shift Support Managers and Shift Managers to meet the requirements for "Start Up" of the PUREX Plant at Hanford in 1982. Certifications included:

a.Head End – charging the A, B, C dissolvers with spent fuel, AFAN and 3 molar nitric acid to dissolve the Zirconium cladding and not the spent fuel.

b.Sampling – taking the D-5 Cave samples, Aqueous Makeup (Nitrite) samples, and various process samples by dip tubes or remote extraction.

c.Central Control – making the process work with various steam jets sucking solutions along correct piping, monitoring temperature and chemical concentrations, communicating with RCT’s, Supervisors and Operators in the field, and monitoring and responding to a conglomeration of process and safety alarms, set points, volume and temperature controls, and radiation controls.

d.N-Cell – Calcining and packaging Plutonium Oxide for shipment to Z-Plant-button production.

e.Waste Handling – Operating the first and second partition cycles in the separation process, sending the F-18 Stream to B-Plant, and proper collecting and disposing of radioactive contaminated waste from process operations and PPE (Clothing).

f.Pre-start mapping and assignment of personnel to A, B, C, and D Shifts to assure adequate number and qualifications for PUREX “Start UP” in October, 1983. (No findings from DOE Readiness Review)

Chemical Technologist in PUREX Laboratory – Hanford, Washington

1. Performing liquid analyses of radioactive isotopes in nuclear lab during separation operations. This involved dilutions using pipettes and drying Pu solutions on discs (for counting) in open hoods with negative air flow. We also deconned contaminated rooms wiyh 2 pair of protective clothing and a mask.

2.Pulling radioactive samples from the PUREX process stream, specifically the D-5 cave.

3.Performing analyses of numerous “standard” samples each month to assure work performed met minimum standards. This certified you on several procedures in the PUREX Chemical Lab.

Quality Potpourri article "Dealing with Quality Assurance Auditors - How to Benefit Most", Fourteenth Annual National Energy Division Conference Proceedings, American Society for Quality Control. (Republished in ASQC Energy Division Update) This was the written paper for the seminar I presented at the National ASQC Conference in Las Vegas, NV.

Westinghouse Hanford Company – Publications:

1. Completed revision of WHC-CM-4-30, Nuclear Safety Manual and expedited the process with Management Standards & Document Control to beat our Award Fee deadline by two weeks.

2. Played a major role in developing Hanford site-wide Hoisting & Rigging Manual.

3. Wrote “Audit Reports” to assess and present results of Conduct of Operations effectiveness and compliance audits and appraisals.
