of qualifying text in this submission has been determined to be generated by AI.
Caution: Percentage may not indicate academic misconduct. Review required. It is essential to understand the limitations of AI detection before making decisions about a student's work. We encourage you to learn more about Turnitin's AI detection capabilities before using the tool.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the percentage mean?
The percentage shown in the AI writing detection indicator and in the AI writing report is the amount of qualifying text within the submission that Turnitin's AI writing detection model determines was generated by AI. Our testing has found that there is a higher incidence of false positives when the percentage is less than 20. In order to reduce the likelihood of misinterpretation, the AI indicator will display an asterisk for percentages less than 20 to call attention to the fact that the score is less reliable.
However, the final decision on whether any misconduct has occurred rests with the reviewer/instructor. They should use the percentage as a means to start a formative conversation with their student and/or use it to examine the submitted assignment in greater detail according to their school's policies. How does Turnitin's indicator address false positives? Our model only processes qualifying text in the form of long-form writing. Long-form writing means individual sentences contained in paragraphs that make up a longer piece of written work, such as an essay, a dissertation, or an article, etc. Qualifying text that has been determined to be AI-generated will be highlighted blue on the submission text.
Non-qualifying text, such as bullet points, annotated bibliographies, etc., will not be processed and can create disparity between the submission highlights and the percentage shown.
What does 'qualifying text' mean?
Sometimes false positives (incorrectly flagging human-written text as AI-generated), can include lists without a lot of structural variation, text that literally repeats itself, or text that has been paraphrased without developing new ideas. If our indicator shows a higher amount of AI writing in such text, we advise you to take that into consideration when looking at the percentage indicated. In a longer document with a mix of authentic writing and AI generated text, it can be difficult to exactly determine where the AI writing begins and original writing ends, but our model should give you a reliable guide to start conversations with the submitting student. Disclaimer
Our AI writing assessment is designed to help educators identify text that might be prepared by a generative AI tool. Our AI writing assessment may not always be accurate (it may misidentify both human and AI-generated text) so it should not be used as the sole basis for adverse actions against a student. It takes further scrutiny and human judgment in conjunction with an organization's application of its specific academic policies to determine whether any academic misconduct has occurred. Argument Essay
My paper will be about self-advocacy for college students with learning disabilities. For college students, self-advocacy is a crucial skill. By empowering them to help navigate challenges through their academic years. It can also help them have access to support services and ask for help for any need effectively. My essay will explain what self-advocacy is, the strategies and skills to help, and the significance of helping understand self-advocacy for them. Self-advocacy is the action of representing oneself or one’s views or interests. The importance of self-advocacy for college students with a learning disability is, “being successful in a postsecondary school by being a responsible assertive,” “making your own choices by knowing your strengths and weaknesses”, and “you can learn to say “no” without feeling guilty” (LDA). Many positive effects of self-advocacy can help you in the long run and that can make you a better person for yourself mentally and physically. There are many learning disabilities, but the main ones are dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, auditory processing, language processing disorder, nonverbal learning disabilities, and visual perceptual/visual motor deficit. Understanding someone else's learning disability can come a long way and it can make them feel that they are not out of place or feel like they’re alone. One way to understand someone else’s learning disability is by communicating. That is the key to understanding someone with it because some people with learning disability have a hard time talking about it or are just not Page 3 of 10 - AI Writing Submission Submission ID trn:oid:::1:290-***-**** Page 3 of 10 - AI Writing Submission Submission ID trn:oid:::1:290-***-**** Jones 2
open about it. The best way to approach someone with it is to “use accessible language”, and
“avoid jargon or long words that might be hard to understand”. Using accessible can help to have a good conversation and not confuse them as much with using very proper grammar. There are also some ways of seeking accommodation for students with learning disabilities, such as extending the time when testing, using a spell-checking program on the computer, and copies of overheads, handouts, and lecture notes. There is accommodation for each learning disability but the ones I talked about are some of the main ones for all the disabilities. With the accommodation, there can also be developing problem-solving skills. It is important to have problem-solving skills because it can “help overcome challenges, help improve planning, reasoning, and creativity” (Kent and S 2023).
If you want to have more self-advocacy, you must enhance some skills to be a better person yourself mentally and physically. Here are some ways to enhance self-advocacy skills. “self- advocacy begins with self-advocacy. By recognizing and understanding our personal strengths and weaknesses, we can effectively communicate our needs and set realistic goals. The ability to approach challenges with confidence and resilience comes from embracing our strengths and improving our weaknesses” (Selby 2023).
Another way to be self-aware about learning disabilities is to recognize the impact it has on your academic performance. Some things that can be recognized are failing to meet the demands of the classroom, poor performance at school, and low scores when assessing the use of academic skills. These can be important and easily noticeable to see the changes in your academic performance and sometimes it can’t be noticeable. When starting to learn skills to help with learning disabilities it can have an impact on the academic performance. Having effective Page 4 of 10 - AI Writing Submission Submission ID trn:oid:::1:290-***-**** Page 4 of 10 - AI Writing Submission Submission ID trn:oid:::1:290-***-**** Jones 3
communication is another skill that can help with self-advocacy. Articulating with professors, advisors, and staff. Having one of them that you can express yourself to them in an appropriate manner. Being able to do that can make you feel comfortable and understood by someone who is teaching you. Also asking for clarification or extra help. That can help build your self-advocacy. It also helps the teacher, professor, and staff to go into more, causes that help the students and other classmates and it also helps the professor's cause it ensures them that the students want to make sure they understand it fully before trying to do it on their own and they still have a hard time understanding it. Knowing where you can get support and going to them is another skill.
“Students with learning disabilities may have access to on-campus support services. School offices of disability services coordinate with instructors and other departments to provide accommodations. Disabled students can also seek out student groups to meet peers with similar disabilities” (Grants 2023).
Having goals set up for the academic year and creating realistic ones is another skill to enhance self-advocacy. Being able to break down and plan your plan academic journey. Here are some ways to help you achieve your academic goals. Staying organized and having an organized schedule can help you in many ways. Having to manage your online and in-person classes can be a struggle sometimes when trying to plan out when you should do your work. Having a well- structured planner, digital calendar, and reminders on your phone. Staying motivated is another way to help. Keeping motivated is sometimes difficult to do when dealing with your school life and personal life at the same time, but setting goals can be both enjoyable and beneficial for you. A healthy work environment will allow you to feel accomplished and motivated to do more if your work is organized and finished by the deadline you set. Being able to break it down into smaller steps helps you stay organized and stay focused when managing schoolwork. Breaking Page 5 of 10 - AI Writing Submission Submission ID trn:oid:::1:290-***-**** Page 5 of 10 - AI Writing Submission Submission ID trn:oid:::1:290-***-**** Jones 4
down tasks into smaller chunks can help make it easier to manage workloads, as well as identify areas where help is needed. It also helps create a sense of accomplishment when tasks are finished. Finally, it can also help identify potential areas of improvement. Taking breaks can help a lot and managing your time with schoolwork. The last chance that will help is strategies in various settings. Interactions with peers and professors. Helping with group projects or participating in an activity or solo activity and also the setting in the classroom or any environment with positive and good vibes. These self-advocacy skills can be lifesaving and help a lot in the long run.
College students with learning disabilities face a multitude of challenges that can significantly impact their academic experience and overall well-being. Stigma and misconceptions with learning disabilities create barriers for the students, requiring them to overcome societal prejudices and address misunderstandings that may hinder their self-advocacy efforts. The lack of awareness and support further compounds these difficulties, as educators and peers may have a limited understanding of learning disabilities, leading to a lack of appropriate accommodations and services in academic settings. This dearth of support can leave students feeling isolated and struggling to navigate their educational journey effectively. Students with learning disabilities may also experience a great deal of emotional distress. Feelings of frustration, self-doubt, and anxiety are common among these students as they grapple with academic challenges and strive to meet the expectations placed upon them. Managing these emotional hurdles while simultaneously advocating for their needs can be overwhelming, requiring a delicate balance between self-care and assertiveness. It is essential for these students Page 6 of 10 - AI Writing Submission Submission ID trn:oid:::1:290-***-**** Page 6 of 10 - AI Writing Submission Submission ID trn:oid:::1:290-***-**** Jones 5
to develop coping mechanisms and seek out mental health resources to support their emotional well-being throughout their college experience.
In essence, the challenges faced by college students with learning disabilities are multifaceted and demand a comprehensive approach to address them effectively. By combating stigma, increasing awareness, and providing adequate support, “educational institutions can create a more inclusive and empowering environment for these students to thrive academically and emotionally” (Budiman 2023). It is crucial for educators, peers, and support services to work collaboratively to ensure that students with learning disabilities receive the assistance and understanding they need to succeed in their academic pursuits and beyond. Self-advocacy is a fundamental aspect of personal development that empowers people to articulate their needs, preferences, and rights effectively. By championing self-advocacy, individuals cultivate a profound sense of empowerment and independence, enabling them to seize control of their lives and make well-informed decisions that align with their values and aspirations. This practice not only nurtures self-confidence but also instills in people the resilience and adaptability needed to confront and overcome challenges with courage and determination. In educational environments, the cultivation of self-advocacy skills plays a pivotal role in enhancing academic performance by encouraging students to proactively engage in problem-solving, communicate effectively with educators and peers, and seek out necessary accommodations and support services to facilitate their learning journey. This, in turn, promotes a level playing field where every learner, regardless of their background or abilities, can access the resources and assistance they need to thrive academically. Moreover, the benefits of self- advocacy extend far beyond the classroom, transcending into professional settings where these Page 7 of 10 - AI Writing Submission Submission ID trn:oid:::1:290-***-**** Page 7 of 10 - AI Writing Submission Submission ID trn:oid:::1:290-***-**** Jones 6
skills are indispensable for success. By honing their self-advocacy skills, individuals develop essential competencies that are highly transferable to the workplace, such as effective communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution. These skills not only enable individuals to navigate the complexities of the professional world with confidence and assertiveness but also equip them with the tools necessary to advocate for their needs, rights, and career advancement opportunities. For individuals with learning disabilities, the cultivation of self-advocacy skills is particularly crucial as it prepares them for the challenges and opportunities that await them in the workforce, ensuring that they can navigate potential barriers and advocate for the accommodations and support they require to excel in their chosen career paths. In essence, promoting self-advocacy is paramount for fostering personal growth, academic achievement, and successful transitions into the workforce, underscoring the significance of individuals advocating for themselves across various facets of their lives. Self-advocacy stands as a key for college students grappling with learning disabilities, offering them a pathway to success in their academic journey. By embracing self-advocacy, students equip themselves with the tools necessary to confront and overcome the challenges that they may go through on their educational journey. It is not only a skill but a mindset that empowers individuals to assert their needs, communicate effectively, and seek the support they require. In cultivating self-advocacy skills, students foster independence, resilience, and a sense of agency over their academic experiences. Encouraging students to nurture their self-advocacy abilities is paramount. They must recognize that it is not a sign of weakness to ask for help but rather a demonstration of strength and self-awareness. Seeking support when needed is a big step toward ensuring academic success and personal growth. By fostering a culture that values and promotes self-advocacy, students are encouraged to take ownership of their education and advocate for Page 8 of 10 - AI Writing Submission Submission ID trn:oid:::1:290-***-**** Page 8 of 10 - AI Writing Submission Submission ID trn:oid:::1:290-***-**** Jones 7
their needs with confidence and support. It is incumbent upon them to provide resources, guidance, and encouragement to help students develop and hone their self-advocacy skills. By fostering a culture of inclusivity and empowerment, educators can contribute significantly to the academic and personal development of students with learning disabilities and create a more supportive and equitable learning environment for all.
