Position: Chief Accountant, CFO. Dates: 1979 – 1983 Duties: Supervised manual accounting operations of 3 processing plants plus corporate office. Supervised corporate admin support staff, interviewed applicants for staff additions. Managed company conversion to computer automation. Selected/hired software developer, assisted with data base design, files organization and reporting protocols. Trained office staff, including managers and corporate officers in using the new computer. Left the company when the President’s daughter earned her CPA and became CFO. It was a good move by the President. More family involvement in the business was necessary.

Position 1: Multi-line claims adjuster in Spokane. Date: 1972 Duties: Handle claims for home, auto, commercial property and casualty claims. Adjusters photograph damages, record interviews with insureds, claimants and witnesses as necessary, Collect evidentiary materials and testify in court proceedings, settle claims after evaluation, pay claims in person by company bank drafts.

Position 2: Promoted to Adjuster in Charge in Butte Montana. Date: 1973 Position 3: Promoted to Comptroller department in Seattle. Date: 1974 Duties: Internal auditor, member of corporate team reviewing and testing division office operating results, profits and expenses compared to budget and corporate expectations. My role was the financial reviews and testing compliance with corporate procedure guides. Division operations audits were typically two week duration. If financial exceptions were diagnosed I stayed an extra week to retrain the division staff and regain procedural compliance. Position 4: Promoted to General Operations Manager of new Spokane Division office. Date: 1977

Duties: Managed the interviewing and hiring of over 200 excellent local applicants to fill division staffing requirements. Organized first line supervisors to become instructors and teach the new employees the operations procedures for their respective departments. Personally taught the accounting and claims support staff their tasks and responsibilities.

Achieved division profitability in year 2, 3 years ahead of corporate projections. In year 3 Spokane was the most profitable division office in North America. Repeated the achievement in year 4. I was asked to transfer to Home Office Operations in Seattle as an assistant V.P. assigned to develop similar successes with the other 13 divisions. I refused the promotion, not wanting to leave Spokane and the people I managed. I was removed from my position by corporate in 1979, who believed the Spokane success was because of staff loyalty to me rather than to Safeco. It may have been a valid criticism.
