American Association of University Professors (AAUP), Washington DC (June 2011-present) Interim Executive Director (July 2023-present)
Serve as the Interim Chief Administrative Officer for the AAUP and AAUP Foundation. Key contributions:
• Successfully manage the AAUP and AAUP Foundation operations to implement the mission of advancing academic freedom and shared governance, defining values and standards for higher education, promoting economic security for higher education professionals, and organizing faculty to achieve those ends.
• Oversee operations budget, staff, and consultants while strengthening accountability and productivity within all departments.
• Implement AAUP policies, procedures, directives, and performance measures among staff.
• Manage staff transitions.
• Work effectively with the AAUP Council leadership and staff to implement strategic initiatives and priorities.
• Ensure close communications with the AAUP Council leadership and with the American Federation of Teachers affiliate to build strong relationships.
• Provide the AAUP Council leadership with the information necessary to make informed decisions.
• Provide support to AAUP membership.
• Communicate risks, opportunities, and successes to the AAUP Council and to staff.
• Represent the AAUP at conferences.
• Collaborate with chief officers of other higher education organizations. Deputy Executive Director (November 2022-June 2023) Assist the Executive Director and senior management in analyzing programs and identifying opportunities to strengthen cross-departmental planning and implementation to maximize AAUP’s overall effectiveness. Support the Executive Director in providing the staff with direction on priority programs and initiatives. Participate in the management, assessment, and evaluation of programs and initiatives to enhance the AAUP’s capacity to organize, mobilize, advocate, and communicate on issues related to our mission and values.
Key contributions:
• Stewarded the AAUP’s relocation to its new office space.
• Serve as the liaison to the Racial Equity Initiative.
• In collaboration with the Human Resources Manager, creating a more robust human resources function.
• In collaboration with the Interim CFO, supervise the finance and membership department operations.
Associate Counsel (June 2011-October 2022)
Provide legal advice regarding business matters such as legal compliance, board governance, tax- exempt status, contracts, and legal relationships among the AAUP Enterprise entities. Key contributions:
• Stewarded the predecessor 501 (c)(3) AAUP through its restructuring into three separate tax- exempt entities (AAUP, AAUP-CBC (now dissolved) and AAUP Foundation) effective January 1, 2013.
• Conducted legal research and wrote memoranda on varied and nuanced legal and tax issues for the 2019 restructuring, effective January 1, 2020.
• Stewarded (with the CFO/COO) the Foundation’s reclassification to a supporting organization of AAUP, effective June 14, 2021; advised the Foundation Reclassification Joint Working Group and the leadership on the legal and tax implications for the reclassification structure.
• Conducted extensive legal research on the Foundation’s Renegotiated contracts related to the Pandemic so that AAUP did not incur fiscal responsibility.
• Provided input on audited financial statements.
• Provided advice to management and staff on local and federal guidance related to the Pandemic; developed Office and Travel Protocols.
• Updated AAUP’s publication, Faculty Handbooks as Enforceable Contracts: A State Guide.
• Negotiated commercial Lease Agreements for AAUP with multiple landlords. Men Can Stop Rape, Inc., Washington DC (December 2009-June 2011) Legal Counsel
Provided non-profit legal advice on legal compliance and board governance. Negotiated and prepared contracts, including employment, commercial lease, license, and teaming agreements. Created financial and personnel policies. Assisted with auditing process. Director of Development, and Executive Committee Member (March 2009-December 2009) Provided interim leadership as a member of a three-person Executive Committee. Developed and coordinated all fundraising activities, including grant writing, event planning, and implementation of individual donor campaign.

Directed all aspects of 1500 member non-profit organization (501(c)(6) tax-exempt entity) and its charitable arm (501(c)(3) tax-exempt entity). Managed budget of over $1 million and exceeded revenue goals. Accountable for strategic planning, fundraising, membership recruitment and retention, human resources, fiscal management, leadership, and policy making (in joint effort with Board of Directors). Served as public spokesperson for organization, delivered presentations, and managed media relations. Key contributions:
Tripled programmatic revenue.
Increased membership by over 30 percent.
