ASC Gastroenterologist Technician / Surgery Scheduling / Coding & Reimbursement

My role as a GI technician allows me to prepare the procedure room and arrange equipment in order to assist the gastroenterologist. As a GI technician, I work closely work gastroenterologists, nurses and anesthesiologists. When preparing operating rooms, I ensure that all the equipment needed for the procedure is properly disinfected and assembled. I also check that the equipment is in working order and place all instruments in areas where they can be easily reached by doctors.

I greet the patients, attach patients to the monitors and position patients prior to the beginning of the procedure. During the procedure my responsibility is to pass instruments required for removal, and biopsy of specimen(s). I have 16 years in GI technician experience, and I am certified with SGNA since 2015. Since 1998 I have had the opportunity to work in medical records, GI front desk, GI appointment desk, GI coder/biller, GI procedure scheduler, ASC procedure scheduler, ASC pre-op/pacu patient care technician, GI Senior Technician, ASC lab specimen processor, order supplies for GI lab, infection control coordinator

Collaboratively works directly with RN’s, GI MD’s and Anesthesiologists

Knowledge of ICD-10, HIPAA & CPT coding, EPIC EMR and Summit System

Serves as a liaison between office, procedural area and the patient

Coordinates with multiple departments to schedule surgeries, including corresponding tests and pre-op procedures done in the outpatient/inpatient setting

Demonstrate a strong understanding of necessary disease states and possess a solid ability to communicate necessary technical, scientific, and product and disease management information to patients and clinical staff

Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and embrace new ways of working in a rapidly changing environment

Conducts in-service training sessions to disseminate information regarding equipment or instruments

Possess the ability to work in a matrix environment and to leverage multiple resources to meet patient and physician needs and deliver results

Perform the role in a compliant manner consistent with all Company policies, practices and procedures

Ensure all patient touchpoints are monitored for great service and constantly analyzed for improvement

Manages physician schedules to optimize capacity and the patient experience

Monitors patient satisfaction and coordinates service recovery efforts.

Refers accounts to Utilization Management to obtain authorization prior to treatment for outpatient procedures

Cleans, disinfects, or calibrates scopes or other endoscopic instruments according to manufacturer recommendations and facility standards.

Obtains copies of Living Will, Power of Attorney/Healthcare Proxy or other pertinent information

Develop in-depth clinical knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the esophagus and the gastrointestinal tract.

In depth knowledge relative to small bowel and stomach disorders; IBD, IBS, Crohn’s disease and motility with an understanding and ability to communicate the reimbursement environment for products related to gastroenterology

Maintains or repairs endoscopic equipment.

Performs safety checks to verify proper equipment functioning

Positions or transports patients in accordance with instructions from medical personnel

Prepares suites or rooms according to endoscopic procedure requirements

Assists physicians or registered nurses in conducting endoscopic procedures

Collects specimens from patients using standard medical procedures. Maintains inventories of endoscopic equipment and supplies

Assists with treatments ordered by physician and supervised by a Registered Nurse (RN)
