Job Description: As Director Of Operations for a janitorial service called All-Brite Cleaning Service in Atlanta, Georgia, I was over 6 MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) locations; I was over 60 employees both full-time and part-time; I was a Salesman and Sales Trainer as well. And, I started up All-Brite Residential Cleaning Service in only six weeks...while it took me six months to start up my own residential cleaning service.
Assignment: While my employer earned $250,000 a year for the MARTA government contract alone, my employer was giving another company our accounts receivables in exchange for monthly operating money and some of our employees refused our paychecks. With that being the case, I knew that the owner and his company were in serious financial trouble. And, I made it my job to do something about it.
Action: (A) For 6 weeks, I asked for permission to take over the checkbook. And, because the owner trusted me, I finally got his permission. (B} After I force-balanced the checkbook (learned how to do that from a bank teller), I set and completed four priorities: #1 Make checks good again, #2 Get the owner a self-directed IRA (Individual Retirement Account) like my own, #3 Stop giving up our accounts receivables each month in exchange for operating money. #4 Start paying down our debt.
Non-accomplishment: Although I achieved all four of the above priorities, "out of the blue," the owner told me to undo everything that I had done for him and to give him back the checkbook. I gave it back to him; afterwards, I left disgusted and brokenhearted not to return
Result: Three years later, I met up with Berto Gaither, the owner. He looked tired and defeated. To me, he said: "Eric, if I ever recover, I will let you handle the checkbook."
