• Marcus Evans is a business conference production firm that researches, develops and manages trade shows and professional events all over the world. As conference producer I did extensive desk research, wrote the 2-3-day conference agendas, secured expert speakers, designed their presentations, and eventually traveled to manage the event on-site. Cold-calling professionals from Fortune 1000 companies and convincing them to speak at our events taught me excellent sales skills!

As a staff writer for a local daily newspaper in a county of about 35,000 people, I wrote my own and copyedited others’ news articles, using AP Style on a strict 10 a.m. daily deadline. I took my own photos and created graphics in Photoshop. My primary “beat” was the City of Gladstone (attended and reported on any/all city council meetings or local happenings). I wrote using AP Style on a strict 10 a.m. deadline. I also covered the Escanaba School District, including school board meetings, special events or happenings, and sometimes sports. Sometimes I covered the police/courts beat. Other duties were:
- Pitching story ideas, photograph, background research, attending events, conducting interviews
- Cultivating and maintaining professional relationships with sources, including national, state and local business owners, elected officials, non-profit professionals, and community members
- Utilizing design software to compile the actual layout of the published paper (pagination)
- Using Photoshop, Quark and Adobe Creative Suite to fix and edit photos and create illustrations, figures, diagrams, charts, graphs and infographics
