Please accept this document as my formal application for the position. For almost 30 years, I’ve had the opportunity to consistently instruct intermediate / advanced television, film-making and video production in the Philadelphia region, teaching undergraduate & graduate courses at local colleges and camps as displayed in my resume.
For the purpose of convenience, I have included my list of professional references, character reference letters, letters of recommendation, from current and previous students and my resume.
I started my graduate degree at Temple in 1990. Life got in the way, between freelancing, getting married and developing my teaching modules, hens I placed my degree on hold until 2006.
In 2008 I earned my Master’s Degree is in Instructional Design & Technology. Basically I know how to find out where problems exist in an organization and make a plan to fix them with the use of multimedia applications like video, audio, interactive web sites & DVDs.

Inside the curriculums, I’ve taught stand-alone courses in Cinematography, Lighting, Producing & Directing, Film History, Business of TV, After Effects, Photoshop/Light room. Post-production courses included Cuts Only, A/B roll, AVID Media Composer, Premiere (inside the CS/CC suite), Final Cut Pro & Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve Studio.
For over sixteen years, I was the primary video portfolio instructor handling the capstone portfolio courses for the AS & BA degree candidates in direct correlation with the Career Services Department being charged with facilitating the quarterly on-location video screening event for graduating students, as well as regularly presented at teen day and open houses.
Serving as an officer in numerous committees in the administration, the faculty union and served as internship advisor to the audio, photography and video departments. In the pursuit of giving students the opportunity to work with real clients, I created a course in 2010 that caters to non-profit agencies. We facilitated over 40 separate finished “Mission Statement” based informational / motivational student created videos for these charity agencies.

During my graduate degree (and in many of my teaching obligations) I have become familiar with several LMS systems, including Moodle, Blackboard, Bright-Space & Canvas.
In my personal business venture I’ve created web sites that contain basic video content for remote training and broadcast quality studio television programming for advanced pitch proposals. A student is an individual who has been developed, molded, influenced and directed by his environment. He is an example of every person, place and thing that touched him. He is a microcosm of the events he has engaged in, and rejected. He comes to me, and I must teach him, where he is planted.
I must know him. I’m the teacher, he must be properly influenced. That is my responsibility.
My teaching philosophy is simple. I encourage my students to live by two of my favorite mottos; "You need to have a consistent sense of urgency", And,”If it is to be, it is up to me".
This makes my teaching philosophy simple.
It comes easy for me to be direct with students. I don’t lie or sugar coat the challenges in the professional world. As I teach I consistently explain that I will empower them in many ways to find work in their chosen career. I’m there biggest cheer leader; however, they need to push every day. Success comes to those who don’t allow life to stop them. Simple and direct.
I consistently explain that the student is ultimately & completely responsible for their own success. It's only them who will make it happen. I'm a guide, a conduit & sometimes a gatekeeper to the industry they would like to work in. In every teachable moment, I stress these elements. In an attempt to connect with each and every student, I tell them my story. I fully understand how overwhelming college can be. They hear my family history. My parents were children of immigrants. My scholastic journey was difficult and my professional career search was challenging.
My parents never finished high school. Times were different then. The highest grade they earned was ninth grade. They were required to work to support their families. However, they believed in education to be a tool for freedom and encouraged their children to do more. So as we watched them work every day for us, we challenge ourselves to fulfill the immigrants dream, education.
By telling my students these true stories, and how difficult it was for me in school, 12
I show them ways to overcome the academic and life challenges they have encountered. This moral push to help others has stayed with me my entire life. It guides every action I take, with students and friends alike. My students are encouraged to believe that they have potential, even though they get overwhelmed with work load or taking care of family, they can still succeed. They need to push every day, and put n 100% into every class.
With this said, I’ve found it very useful to spearhead an on-line presence to present teaching opportunities:
1. LIBRARY:
I’ve created a library of high quality samples that are available 24/7 to review. I’ve made sure the samples are internet available & mobile friendly. The students need to consistently & critically review samples of excellent industry related work and have the opportunity to discuss the reasons “why” the work is acceptable in the industry they are entering.
I’ve created several you-tube channels to help them review this said material on their mobile devices. Many of programs I have personally worked on, and others I have adjudicated. I explain the how the work was sold, contracted, created and delivered. Giving samples of contracts, packaging materials and final deliverables, the learner has an opportunity to learn all they need to know to be successful. Not a rock unturned. This method pushes the individual to be better that just a media expert, or artist. It is the creation of a thinker, a business person, a tax payer! 2. AGENCIES:
In an effort to give real world experience to students, I have brought different styles of non-profit agencies into the class that need real useful professional level programming. These workshop and managed class environments create final programming for the agency. This opportunity is some of the best preparation a learner can have. Student run organizations: I helped develop the on campus film club and organization “YCP Today” (live-streamed TV show),
“Beyond the Viewfinder”, “The Video Production Club”
& “The Bible Club”. I have also arranged to have local organizations such as the Greater Philadelphia Videographer Association come into the school for their meetings. In my class room, I accept that the student is a combination of everything that has ever influenced them. They have the right to not only work in their industry of choice, but also be good stewards of society. They are who they are. Hens, I need to constantly figure out how to communicate with them, so they can learn.
One way to help students grow is to break my class into small groups, and give them specific milestones. These finished parts should fit into the whole. This encourages professional behavior while they interact with one another. Basically, the students treat each other like small companies. They become responsible to one another. This process brings this out in my student’s inner strengths and allows them to blossom. Sometimes, I give incentives to the groups; free lunch, or a grade bump if the project is done at a higher level that requested. This motivation is critical for students who don’t have the infrastructure at home to motivate them. We sometimes 14
need to be their parents, as well as their teachers. I stress that this experience is the start of their professional life. Every moment in class is a percentage of the accumulated knowledge they’ll take with them to their profession. To succeed, you must first acknowledge that this is your training ground for life: make the most of it. It pleases me to say, that in a very competitive market place for TV/Video & Film-making, a large percent of my graduates are employed. In many cases, they keep in touch and tell me their career stories. The one think I hear most often, is how they can still hear me “whispering” my little bits of technology advice in their ears.
At that point, it makes it all worth-while.

Some faculty simply teach from a lesson plan; however, Craig teaches with passion, with experience, with enthusiasm, and with respect for students. Craig sets very clear expectations for students; firm but kind, it is clearly obvious that what he wants is for his students to learn and in turn for those students to become successful, employed graduates. A gifted and talented educator, Craig has been a cornerstone of the Digital Filmmaking and Video Production department at The Art Institute of Philadelphia. It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I write this letter of recommendation for Craig DoVidio. I have known Craig over the course of more than a decade both as a fellow faculty member and later as the Director of the School of Media Arts and his direct supervisor for the past five years. Professor DoVidio has consistently exceeded all of my expectations and I can say unequivocally that he is one of the finest teachers I have come across in my almost two decades in higher education.
Professor DoVidio has held the distinction of Professor at the university throughout my entire tenure and deservedly so. With over 35 years at our inst itution he is one of the pillars of the DFVP program and the school as a whole. Craig has a stellar track record as a teacher with consistently excellent student evaluat ions. Over the years he has become a favorite of students for his abil ity to incorporate real life examples into classroom lectures. His intuitive understanding of the commercial aspects of the industry and his ability to communicate to his students t he importance of those factors is a testament to his innate teaching abil ity.
