In order to preform well with customer service the first ability, one should have is communication skills. One should be able to communicate with people from all backgrounds and education levels. Part of communicating is knowing how to really LISTEN. Active listening skills go a long way with learning what it is someone is looking for and how you can help.
Another attribute one should have is having an outgoing personality. To be good at customer service one should always be ready to go out of their way to engage with people and learn what it is that someone wants. Knowledge of products is another skill one should have. Knowing all products available and which products would better fit the customer wants. There may be situations where your department doesn't carry the exact product the customer wants, but if you have knowledge of your available products, and a clear understanding of what the customer wants then you should be able to make suggestions that fit the customer's needs. You should have the ability to do this if you have the above mentioned skills.
