NEW JERSEY LEARNING LINK MATHEMATICS, English CURRICULUM

Ted Mills joined the agency in July 2004 as the head teacher of the agency’s Learning Link, which is housed at 438 Summit Ave. His prime responsibility is to work with and re-educate those individuals who are unemployed in getting their test scores up to a level that would qualify them for some type of training or re-employment opportunity. He brings a sense of business sense and motivation to the classroom. He focuses on math and reading challenges and uses the technology within the classroom, which includes computers as part of the learning experience.

Practice will help to improve and makes things perfect. Studying the mechanics or what I call the rules of certain mathematical problems, will help give insight into logical reasoning. This does and will help a student to avoid the pitfalls of attempting to solve a problem using the wrong method. An acquaintance with the pitfalls does help students not to fall into them. Learning certain techniques will acquaint the student with correctness. When a student can detect an error, the student is less likely to continue down a path that is not logical or accurate. All reasoning is thinking, but not all thinking is reasoning.

Points of view are conventionally known to consist of two types, Deductive and or Inductive. Most arguments presented suggest that the argument has the premises to provide the evidence of the truth of its conclusion. Deductive reasoning engages in a premise of conclusive evidence. As mathematical problems in the Learning Link classroom are presented to students, the condition which creates the conclusion or answer to a problem is either valid or invalid. Proving it is absolutely impossible for the answer to be wrong. It is hoped that the student will begin to understand the relationship between premises and the truth shown for the conclusion of the problem.

NEW JERSEY LEARNING LINK MATHEMATICS REENTRY CURRICULUM

THE REENTRY MATHEMATICS PROGRAM WILL FOCUS MATHEMATIC materials designed for a thirty-day class. There will be twelve classes per year. Hours will be 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. The selected teaching materials provide complete program support. The Learning Link instruction will include subject chapter overviews and plenty of instructor resources, step-by-step lessons, and answers to the mathematical problems as well as the structure of the problem and structure of its solutions.

SKILLS in seven standards;

Numbers and Operations,

Multiplication, addition, subtraction including negative numbers, division including borrowing and reducing terms.

Algebra,

One-step equations two-step equations multi-step equations absolute value equations. Writing variable expressions, order of operations. Evaluating expressions, distributive property, solving proportions, combining like terms, method to FOIL, finding percentage and or amount of increase, original cost

Algebra word problems, distance rate and time. Celsius and Fahrenheit, rate of sound, linear math problems.

Measurement,

Time, mass length, volume temperature conversions

Geometry,

Circles, squares, rectangles, trapezoids, cones, triangles, area, perimeter, volume, surface area. Hypotenuse, finding the missing angle. Determine and calculate the missing sides.

Data Probability, statistics and ratios

Probability and Statistics Measures of Central Value using charts, bar graphs, pie graphs.

Logic and Reasoning. Science of how to evaluate arguments and reasoning. Introduction to Critical thinking the process of evaluation which uses logic to separate truth from falsehood.

Problem-solving, including mathematical reasoning skills. The approach to each student will be defined by grade level. It is also important to control for other skills including low reading aptitude that may interfere with the reentry student’s ability to demonstrate understanding.

The Learning Link goal is to reinforce the language of mathematics and its formats and concepts. Students will be acquiring proficiency and skills to close gaps and improve grade levels whereas they have struggled with their past math program. With practice and applications of the new Learning Link approach to math consciousness, students will learn and retain concepts to help prepare them with new abilities. This will act to improve levels for success on employment standardized tests. The Learning Link guide objectives include enrichment for activities for multiple levels of ability.

Introduction to test for each area of challenge include lessons with problems to write on the board, extensive practice exercises in developmental mode, and enrichment activities for multiple levels of ability. Learning Link Reentry students will be assessed each week to provide objective measures of students' understanding of concepts taught.
