Main Idea and Details

A main idea is what a paragraph or passages is mostly about. Details support the main idea by further explaining or giving more information about it.

1. What is the heading (in green lettering) below the title, “Buffalo Hunt?” The headings act as CLUES to the main idea of each section. What might be the MAIN IDEA based heading of pg. 407?

2. Topic sentences are usually one sentence and most times appear at the beginning of a paragraph or the very end of a paragraph.

Take a look at the paragraph on pg. 409 that begins with “The first horses…” Is the first sentence or the last sentence the main idea? Describe why?

3. Look at the paragraph right after it. Staring with, “Now they could…” and concludes at the top of pg. 410. Paraphrase in your own words some details about why horses changed lives. 4. On pg. 411, second paragraph: “Hunting was a manʼs responsibility.” Write down which sentences support this main idea. 5. On the same page, fourth paragraph: “The buffalo was the biggest animal on the plains.” Tell which sentences support this main idea.

6. Take a look at the third paragraph on pg. 411. Identify the main idea and write three details that support that main idea. Use this graphic organizer to help:
