Orthofix – Lewisville, TX - contract - 9/2020 to 3/2021
Engineer – Special Supplier Quality Project Manager
Innovative and minimally invasive extremity solutions to help surgeons improve their patient’s quality of life
(I was hired to create this project because I have 30 years of experience in Manufacturing as a Manufacturing Engineer and fabrication (machining) processes. The hiring Manager wanted me specifically due to this long experience because Orthofix wanted to lower discrepant material costs due to the rejection of internally created instruments as well as those from external suppliers. My duties were to scour the ERP database to identify the instruments with a history of MCRs and analyze the recorded data to begin to identify the root cause. I was responsible for creating the internal resolution team from the departments of manufacturing, quality, and R&D along with each specific external supplier for components not manufactured in-house. Due to my long experience in machining processes, metrology, and mechanical design, I was able to lead this team to identify the root causes and formulate resolutions for each component. The resulting benefits to the company of this project were never quantified during my contract. That job fell to Quality and Management (after my departure). But given that the average monetary cost of a single rejection was in the area of $5000, it is safe to assume that the cost savings over time would add up to millions of $$$

Supervisor, Tool Maker / Designer / Tool Grinder / Wire EDM Programmer
Manufacturer of custom-designed screw machine-made parts
Saved $18,000 and hundreds of labor hours by designing and building all work-holding tooling for wire EDM, achieving greater ease of use and higher accuracy than recommended high-end tooling
Made machine tools for all six company manufacturing departments serving major manufacturing clients worldwide, including IBM, Dana, Honeywell
Design and built machine tool fixtures, automation machines, machine parts, ID and OD microform tools (involved writing programs and operating wire EDM machines to cut form tools)
Frequently recognized by company president and users for the ability to achieve unmatched accuracy & finish on tooling, resulting in longer-lasting tools, much higher quality finished products, and greater productivity
Supervisor said, “Randy’s work was always timely, and his quality consistently the best. His technical skill
and creativity enabled our company to do work that our competitors could not.”
Supervise, mentor, and develop newly hired toolmakers, all of whom advanced to positions of increasing productivity. I hired each new toolmaker by two criteria; “Attitude” and “Aptitude”. I have always believed that if a worker has these two qualities, I could teach them anything. The flip side is, that if they lacked one or both of the two essentials, I could not teach them anything.
