Byte Consulting Jul 2003 to Present

Independent data analysis using Microsoft Access, SQL Server, Excel, and Qlik for management consulting engagements. Many engagements have been strategic sourcing with AT Kearney. Other consulting firms have been Advanced Operations Partners, Emerging Sun, Maine Pointe, Tenzing Consulting, Rejoined Consulting, Privatin Consulting, Maine Pointe Consulting, Athlon Group, Lansdowne Consulting, TransPac Access, Freedom Square, QP Group, and Detroit Public Schools. Examples of these projects include :

SPEND ANALYSIS ENGAGEMENTS ---

Included developing a Business Intelligence process to improve spend visibility. This process uses an ETL (Extract, Transform, and Load) process to place information into a Qlikview spend tool housing charts, graphs, and tables. Clients included Portland General Electric, Integer, Brightview, Sedgwick, Go Daddy, Groupon, US Foods, Westcon, Toys R Us, and Catamaran.

ANALYTIC ENGAGEMENTS ---

Conagra Foods

Developed a forecasting model to assess future resource requirements for a 200 person Research and Development organization. This model uses historical information by project type, resource type, and stage to forecast current project demand. Forecasting this demand, this group could then decide when additional projects could be added to their pipeline.

Canadian National Railway

Developed and implemented a tracking tool to monitor material logistics and construction progress of capital improvement projects. Schedules and statuses were provided by key stakeholders in Excel, imported into an Access database, and generated an Excel dashboard identifying concerns. This process was refreshed weekly and distributed using a toolbar placed on their desktop to download the dashboard and input files from a corporate server.

Treehouse Foods – Integration of ERP Data

Developed and implemented an ETL (Extract Transfer Load) process to integrate customer information into a harmonized system consisting of seven ERP systems with over 100 data sources. Created a reporting tool to track and monitor progress.

Merisant – Total Cost Model

Analysis to determine ineffeciencies in their supply chain – Transportation from the production facility to their warehouse, Warehousing, transportation from their warehouse to their customer.

Miner Handling Systems – Serviceability Analysis

Defining and using key metrics in determining “gaps” between service demands and availability of third party providers.

BE Aerospace – Total Cost Model

Engagement to determine total purchase cost of items to be assembled between low cost country and non-low cost countries.

Bridgestone / Firestone – Customer pricing strategy

National service center (2,500+ stores nationwide with 100,000+ customers daily) uniquely prices parts and labor for each customer. This engagement highlighted price variances through the analysis of customer invoices and recommended price strategy improvements.

Herc Equipment Rental – Business intelligence cost allocation model

Equipment rental revenue can easily determined by store, month, and equipment type. Not so with the cost of this equipment. An object-oriented business intelligence system was designed, developed, and implemented to allocate costs to specific equipment. This system became an automated monthly process. It extracted data from multiple corporate legacy systems, then transformed into a manageable format. An object-oriented system allowed user-defined parameters to aggregate, query, calculate, and present useful statistics in useable format.

Caterpillar – Business intelligence cost tracking system

A business intelligence reporting system was developed to track progress and highlight discrepancies. Transactional data was provided to the business intelligence system via Access databases (with VBA). System maps were provided via Excel. Monthly, the system imported, processed, and created Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Powerpoint reports using VBA.

Caterpillar - Price configuration of RF transmission modules

60,000 RF modules placed on equipment send satellite transmissions to report their operating status. The monthly cost was based on number of modules within specific usage buckets. Each bucket was defined by different capacity and price. This engagement developed a system to assign modules to cost buckets minimizing cost while maintaining contract requirements.

Avon – Global finance system integration

Prior to the global finance system, Avon used 30 to 35 finance systems run at the country / regional level. As part of a team integration effort, old standards were identified, conformance to the old standards assessed and exceptions resolved. New standards were created and users trained. Old data was transformed and loaded into the new system.

Detroit Public Schools – Risk finance database development

Managed the design, development, and maintenance of risk finance databases for Detroit Public Schools. Included a worker’s compensation system and other minor systems. Detroit Public Schools is a self-funded program with approximately 1,500 claims per year. The system records key information, pays bills, and provides state and federal regulatory reporting.

CHC Helicopter

Strategic sourcing of repair parts for servicing helicopters.

Famous Dave’s Restaurants

Strategic sourcing assessment. Strategic sourcing of disposables, fish, repair and maintenance activities.

National Express (United Kingdom)

Strategic sourcing engagement to identify key cost drivers in reducing cost-of-purchase for buses and coaches.

PF Chang’s

Strategic sourcing assessment to identify savings opportunity. Continued with analysis supporting the sourcing of janitorial services, equipment services, and office supplies.

British Petroleum (US Refineries)

Strategic sourcing engagement included categorization, manufacturer name / part number identification, RFP creation and analysis for MRO spend of US refineries.

Arvin Meritor

Two direct strategic sourcing engagements for direct purchasing including castings, stampings, forgings, motors, plastics, fasteners, bearings, and packaging, springs, and powder metals.

Caterpillar

Two indirect strategic sourcing engagements for Cat including segments MRO, transportation, wood products packaging, marketing, chemicals/gases, security, IT services, waste, site services, and temp labor.

Chrysler

AT Kearney MRO sourcing and procurement for Chrysler. This initiative managed MRO supply chain and procurement activities for all Chrysler factories. In addition to strategic sourcing, this engagement developing tactical approaches for paper operations (an e-catalog, ordering, invoicing and payments), as well as physical distribution (warehousing, delivery, and stock room cribs / vending machine replenishment) for all MRO related purchases.

Intier Automotive

Intier’s strategic sourcing direction was to consolidate purchasing into a global organization. Many recently purchased Intier factories were single-shop factories with their own purchasing. Global purchasing was to improve supplier relations and reduce costs.

Federal Mogul

Strategic sourcing engagement for direct purchasing. Interfacing with AT Kearney E-breviate.
