Capital Group Companies, Irvine, CA, Senior Solution Reliability Engineer 2009 – 2023

Projects:

October 2020: – April 2023:

As the end of life of Sybase adaptive server contract was drawing nearer, the trade processing application was required to switch to MS SQL server before 2024.

I managed a project to use MS SQL server for the trade application with 5 contractors. During this upgrade process, some of the business functionality is also being changed to accommodate the DB upgrade.

Implemented multiple Splunk Dashboards and Alerts for a new trading Project.

Led end-to-end product lifecycle management, from ideation to launch, multiple Trade Operations project modules. Successfully delivered product launches resulting in smooth trading operations.

July 2019 – September 2020:

Implemented the application process checkout Automation for the Accounting application login process. The module runs every hour using windows scheduler without any human touch, opens the front-end application and does the login process automatically and checks if the application is up and running fine. If all look fine, the application closes automatically in 5 seconds and restarts again after one hour to repeat the same process. The whole thing is fully automated, and the script runs in a windows scheduler. Should there be any issue, automatic Incident will be assigned to appropriate team using ServiceNow functionality.

April 2018 – July 2019:

Automation was highly encouraged in Capital Groups and as part of that, Application checkout steps were Automated for various Investment System applications where App checkout steps were manually processed. This helped reduce manual checkout parts for application checkout process. Python Scripts were developed to do the checkouts instead of manual checkout. Both frontend and Backend application checkouts were taken care of in this.

May 2009 – April 2018:

Started supporting multiple applications across the Investment System using the SLM tools. All the different aspects of SLM (Incident Management, Problem Management, Change management and release management) were properly followed.

Mentored and lead a team of SREs to identify opportunities within BackOffice area applications. Mentor peers to operate smartly and eliminate manual repetitive tasks.

I usually provide feedback to upper management, and guidance to SREs on new monitoring and alerting tools like Splunk and Dynatrace to ensure applications are available, reliable, supportable, and resilient.

Enabled implementation of automated checkouts and monitoring strategy for critical applications using tools like Python.

Collaborated with project teams to incorporate non-functional requirements. This ensures that availability, reliability, and supportability of newly built applications are addressed in the initial phase of each project.

Developed the metrics reports and Trend Analysis reports using Service Now reporting and Business Objects tools.

Lead Problem Investigations to do root cause analysis of major incidents or frequent incidents.

Created Reports, Alerts, Monitors, and Dashboards using Splunk, Service Now, Dynatrace, and Python.

Capital Group Companies, Irvine, CA, Senior Programmer Analyst 2001 – 2009

October 2007 – April 2009 (FOR STARS split):

Architected application split based on business unit Unix, SQL and ETL tool (Informatica). This included creating business specific interfaces, reports, and business specific processing logic. Designed, Developed and Released application using PowerBuilder, Sybase SQL server.

I managed FOR STARS split project. My role was to lead the project with 9 members.

As a project manager, I planned the work and assigned the work to tech leads and monitor the progress and update the status to management.

March 2007 – Sep 2007 (Power center 7 (Informatica) conversions):

I was asked to switch to ETL tool, and we converted 130 Unix command utility transfer jobs to use Informatica tool.

I managed the Power center conversion project with 4 members of the team to convert existing transfer process to use Power Center ETL tool.

Efficiency increased by 30% as the process was totally automated using the Informatica tool.

Mar 2006 – Feb 2007 (Java based reporting application with Apache / Tomcat):

We were assigned to develop a Java based reporting application that is web based and would interface with Portfolio Accounting database to generate on demand reports for accounting users.

That application was called Report Request Dialogue Delivery (RRDD) and it was GUI application and used Apache Tomcat webserver.

Due to the nature of the technologies (Java, Tomcat), this application was widely accepted by the business users for the ease of using. This enhanced the efficiency by 40% for the users in generating various reports.

Aug 2004 – Feb 2006 (PowerBuilder 9.0 upgrade):

Asked to convert and upgrade existing client server Front Office Reporting Application System (FORAS) from PowerBuilder 7 to PowerBuilder 9.

Skilled resources for PowerBuilder 9 were not easily available initially as PowerBuilder technology introduced new web enables concepts and libraries in the tool. So, there was a big knowledge gap experienced during the initial period of the project.

Once proper skill sets and resources were identified and the project timeline was extended, the project was completed using Sybase and PowerBuilder 9.

After implementation of the project, we encountered lots of initial run time technical issues and all were resolved subsequently.

Sep 2003 - July 2004 (Sybase upgrade and server change):

Asked to upgrade the existing applications from Sybase version 11 to Sybase 12.5 for multiple applications in Capital Group.

Different departments had their own timelines for deployment, their own applications in Capital Groups, which became a challenge as we had a specific timeline and hard deadline for Sybase Upgrade. I analyzed the schedules and impacts for each team and finalized the scope and timeline.

I managed the project with 3 members to upgrade Sybase database from version 11 to 12.5 for Broker commission Application. While upgrading the Sybase, some other applications needed to be touched in front end to adapt the Database changes.

That way when the upgrade was completed, all the different client server applications using Sybase were on the same version of Sybase.

Oct 2002 – Aug 2003 (Broker Commission Reporting System (BCRS) ported to PowerBuilder from SmallTalk):

Asked to convert an existing trading application developed in SmallTalk tool to Powerbuilder7 in Capital Group.

Smalltalk skills were not available in the team at that time.

So, we decided to rewrite the app in PowerBuilder7.

I managed the project with 4 team members starting from project proposal to Project implementation phases.

Dec 2001 – Sep 2002 (IPSW project):

Asked to develop a system to display the Autosys Scheduler batch job status based on a given date.

The ask was to make it available to all support people in the Company globally to be able to check the job status 24 hours.

Developed the system using Apache Tomcat Webserver, Java Server Page (JSP and Java Servlet) instead of using client server technology to make the system web enabled.

This webpage displayed all batch jobs with success or failure status for any date range and the effort was very much appreciated by the business.
