I have worked with Julia since June of 1994, at which time I began working as the primary associate counsel of the Philip M. Tobin law firm in San Jose . (From 1979 through February of 1994 I was a house counsel litigation attorney with a major insurance company in California.) From 1994 to 1996 Julia assisted me on numerous files in a purely administrative capacity. From 1997 to the present day she has worked with me on the full gamut of my cases in both administrative and paralegal capacities. I have, of course, worked with numerous administrative assistants and paralegals in the course of my twenty-five year career as a trial attorney. Julia stands out in this field. Her command of the innumerable administrative aspects of a civil lawsuit is at this point comprehensive and instinctive. She oversees a system of file organizing that is superior in its details and internal logic to any such system I have ever seen in any law office. And she is as attentive and effective in her written and verbal interaction with other law firms as any office administrator or paralegal I've ever known. All of this has made Julia thoroughly versed in the administrative and practical aspects of civil litigation. However what I’ve always found particularly remarkable about Julia is her enthusiasm for not just probing but actually understanding the basic legal issues and legally significant facts of any case. There is nothing halfway about the way her mind works. Of course, in the absence of a formal legal education, her arrival at this point of inquiry often does not generate an analytic conclusion, but her probing curiosity and focus in this process is truly remarkable. Initially I never asked her to do any of this. The mental activity simply flowed from her. As I became more appreciative of her faculties and insights I found myself increasingly discussing the facts and related basic legal issues of cases with her. As an attorney, what I find exciting about Julia’s mind is her remarkable ability to probe a factual setting with concepts and intuition simultaneously. She is comfortable with basic legal concepts and the inherently linear dimension of formal logic. But within that structured landscape her intuitive assessment of the facts moves like lightning in a storm front.
