Manage renewal process of 5 casualty captives.

Worked with management to develop a $5M primary umbrella program to cover the members of three of the captives. This will provide a needed solution for many of our captive members improving their ability to protect their company assets and reduce their overall cost of coverage. Develop a pricing model to project needed premiums for the umbrella on an individual risk basis and the overall captive.

OLD REPUBLIC GROUP, Chicago, Illinois July 2017 – May 2021

Senior Underwriting Manager, Old Republic Allied Management Company

Manage a team of casualty underwriters which analyzes and prices a risk management book of new and renewal Worker’s Compensation (50%), Automobile Liability (40%) and General Liability (10%) business for Old Republic Risk Management. Oversee all new and renewal quotes provided by the team ensuring adequate pricing with proper terms and conditions. The total book of risk-transfer business is worth $62 Million in annual premium (these premiums reflect large deductibles on all lines).

Initially hired to develop and manage a new treaty supported AL / GL risk transfer book of business previously placed in the facultative reinsurance market as well as underwrite and price Workers’ Compensation business. This included developing a liability pricing model, managing the book data and providing live presentations to nine treaty reinsurers. Manage both the Workers’ Compensation and Liability Treaties on an annual basis. Promoted to be the manager of the underwriting group responsible for Workers’ Compensation and Liability Risk Transfer Coverage in February 2018.

Develop team standards with respect to submission questions, meeting quote deadlines, proper file maintenance / documentation and adherence to company guidelines. Track all submission flow within the group and ensure proper adherence to long range goals for profitability, rate change and quote timeliness. Oversaw all training requirements presented to the individuals in the group to ensure understanding of loss rating models and their use. Work with the claims and accounting departments to develop large claim communications, update TPA audit information and persuaded management to obtain new loss data tracking system for the 36 TPA used by Old Republic Risk Management.

Vice President, Casualty Facultative Underwriter

Accountable for underwriting, marketing and developing a book of facultative reinsurance within assigned underwriting territory. Underwriting territory includes Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Nebraska and San Francisco. Majority of the Reinsurance business written with risk management and excess surplus casualty underwriting units of national and regional insurance carriers.

Wrote approximately 20% Workers' Compensation, 60% Auto Liability and 20% General Liability business annually. Developed a book of profitable business worth more than $10,000,000 in annual reinsurance premium since 2003 representing approximately 120 certificates with 40% in new business generated each year. The book consisted mainly of risk management business, public entity including abuse and molestation coverage, with professional liability for educators, public officials and provided EPLI coverage, also much of the business was coverage for umbrella, excess and excess and surplus covers over both admitted and non-admitted paper. Coverage was provided for alternative risks such as captives and pooled risks. We provided coverage both on an excess of loss basis and a pro rata basis. Met or exceeds production goals in all but one year with the exception being 2% below assigned goal. Produced in the top 3 of all casualty underwriters in the country on a consistent basis while maintaining underwriting integrity, pricing and coverage standards.

Led the Worker’s Compensation profitability team comprised of 4 senior underwriters and the head actuary to develop and understand the best process and structure to write profitable Worker’s Compensation reinsurance. The group presented a strategy to produce profitable Workers’ Compensation facultative reinsurance to the head of the Facultative Department. This strategy was adopted by the U.S. Facultative group to produce profitable results in this line of coverage.

Provided the opportunity to work in the London Treaty office of Swiss Re for the 4th quarter of 2013. Analyzed various treaty opportunities within the London territory with an eye towards bottom line profitability. Met with various C-Suite insurance executives to understand the specific customer's treaty needs, underwriting appetite and controls they have in place. Work with our London Actuarial team to develop and present very creative solutions to complex insurance needs.
