I am in charge of the high reach truck department but I also cross train new employees so I start by showing and quizzing them on safety videos and equipment controls. Give new employees a tour of the facility as I point out and explain all the safety protocols expected from them, exits, fire extinguishers and eye wash stations are all shown. Then we learn the equipment hands on whether they’re on a single fork sitdown, double-wide sit down or a high reach and as soon as I see that they’re comfortable, safe and efficient, I’ll certify them and move on to the system. We have VMUs so it might be different from what they’re probably used to but I make sure I explain the SAP system thoroughly as well as trouble shooting in case of problems such as dead labels, glitches and partial pallets among other things. I will always make sure my trainees are fully trained to be safe, efficient and accurate before certifying and letting them on the floor. My name and reputation means a lot to me in this business and I’ve kept it strong for 16 years by hard work, being safe and leading by example and that’s the mind set I want to instill in all my trainees and co-workers.
