CLOSE ON: a PAIR OF EYES, lids fluttering, sleeping soundly. Suddenly, the eyes startle awake as we PULL OUT to meet: 1 INT. WEBER HOME - AMELIA’S BEDROOM - SALT LAKE CITY - DAY 1 AMELIA WEBER, 40, reserved, enigmatic, effortlessly gorgeous even freshly woken. She checks the time on her phone: 5:59am. The clock turns to 6:00am. Her alarm goes off. She stands, pads through her room of spartan but stylish furnishings. 2 INT. WEBER HOME - KITCHEN - DAY 2
Amelia enters the kitchen of her charming craftsman. A series of quick vignettes of her MORNING ROUTINE: She brews coffee, foams milk.
Placing toast in a toaster, she cracks eggs into a pan. Expertly assembling three lunches, she packs two into tupperware and one into a Taylor Swift-themed lunchbox. The toast pops. The eggs sizzle.
She plates it beautifully, sets it on the kitchen table. 3 INT. WEBER HOME - RUBY’S ROOM - DAY 3
Amelia peers into a little girl’s bedroom. Through the darkness, stuffed animals and Taylor Swift posters are seen. Amelia tiptoes to the bed, a BLANKETED LUMP in its center. She lies down beside it, curls herself around the lump. AMELIA
Wake up, sweetie-
As Amelia pulls down the blanket to reveal TWO PILLOWS. AMELIA (CONT'D)
(mock horror)
Oh no, my daughter has turned into
a pillow!
As the closet door BURSTS open revealing RUBY WEBER, 10, precocious, adorable, strumming her beloved GUITAR. RUBY
Got you!
Blue Rev. (02/02/24) 2.
Amelia pulls Ruby to her, snuggles her.
AMELIA
Oh you got me, huh? Who found who,
exactly?
RUBY
I hid for like 10 seconds before I *
knew you’d come in. So predictable.
AMELIA
Ok, can you predict what I’m gonna
say next?
RUBY
I know, I know. We’re late.
4 INT. WEBER HOME - KITCHEN - DAY 4
Breakfast is finished and now Amelia and Ruby beeline around the kitchen, trying to get out of the house for the day. AMELIA
Did you brush your teeth?
Ruby flashes a sparkling, pearly white smile - “Yep.” AMELIA (CONT'D)
But you didn’t brush your hair. Go
get the-
But Ruby’s one step ahead of her Mom as she opens the silverware drawer, hands Amelia a BRUSH.
AMELIA (CONT'D)
Why is your hairbrush in the
silverware drawer?
RUBY
Because we’re always in the kitchen
when you tell me to get my brush.
So I moved it here.
AMELIA
Smart. But also gross.
RUBY
It’s not gross. It’s my word of the
day: efficient.
Amelia considers this, recognizes Ruby has a point. 3.
AMELIA
At least keep it in the junk
drawer.
Then Amelia tenderly brushes Ruby’s hair.
5 EXT. WEBER HOME - DRIVEWAY - DAY 5
A sleepy suburban street of updated Craftsmen, the quiet disturbed as Amelia and Ruby rush out to Amelia’s SUV. They climb in. Amelia starts the car.
Then Amelia stops the car, hops out, rushes back into the house, returns with Ruby’s BACKPACK.
6 INT. AMELIA’S SUV - WEBER DRIVEWAY - DAY 6
As Amelia climbs back into the car -
AMELIA
If you forgot your backpack for
school, what did you remember?
As Amelia turns around to find Ruby strumming her guitar. RUBY
(her guitar’s name)
Baby Taylor.
AMELIA
Of course.
7 EXT. CANYON PARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - DAY 7
An elementary school surrounded by rolling, verdant hills. Amelia’s SUV pulls up to the drop-off line, creeps forward. 8 INT. AMELIA’S SUV - CANYON PARK SCHOOL - DAY 8
As Ruby hustles to collect her belongings -
AMELIA
I love you. Have a great day.
AMELIA (CONT'D)
Help someone today.
RUBY
Help someone today.
7.
BIANCA
Yes, but I’d like to be involved so
I can keep the party contained-
SOFIA
Who wants a party “contained?”
(off Bianca’s expression)
Fine. It’ll be very “contained.”
Just la familia-
T.J.
And 200 of her closest friends.
Everyone laughs, then T.J. yawns.
SOFIA
Oh, Mijo, do you need a nap?
BIANCA
No, Má, he doesn’t need a nap. He’s
a grown man-
T.J.
Actually, I could use a nap. I was
up ‘til 2am practicing.
BIANCA
You’re up ‘til 2am every night.
T.J.
That’s my most creative time.
BIANCA
Then it’s good you don’t have kids.
T.J.
(dry)
Thanks, Bianca.
(downs his coffee)
I’m on farmstand today.
T.J. yawns again, grabs a Concha, kisses Sofia, then exits. 14 INT. HOUSE REMODEL - DAY 14
The home is mid-renovation, a massive remodel under way. Amelia weaves through CONSTRUCTION WORKERS and CARPENTERS. She arrives at a makeshift workspace in the back of the house to find MAURA MILLER, 40’s, at a drafting table.
But earbuds in, Maura doesn’t hear Amelia approach. Amelia creeps up, pops out one of Maura’s headphones, listens to it. 8.
AMELIA
What is it? More self-help?
MAURA
It was “self-help” in the 80’s.
It’s “self-care” now.
AMELIA
(teasing)
So sorry.
MAURA
And this book is great - it’s about
challenging our self-imposed
limitations. It suggests that
instead of saying “no” to
ourselves, we say “not yet.”
(then)
Can I send you a copy of the book?
AMELIA
Not yet.
Maura laughs as Amelia hands her a packed lunch.
MAURA
Did I get a juicebox today or did
you just leave me a quarter for
milk?
AMELIA
Just be glad your business partner
cares about you as much as I do.
MAURA
Oh I appreciate the TLC, but I’d
love it if we could actually go out
to lunch one of these days.
AMELIA
(playful)
And that’s why I am in charge of
corporate accounting.
Then Amelia sits, opens her laptop, reviews her schedule. AMELIA (CONT'D)
What’s this 2-3pm block today?
MAURA
A news team is coming by. They’re
doing a piece on passive building.
9.
AMELIA
An interview? You can take it.
MAURA
We can take it together. You’re
half the company. Half the story.
AMELIA
But all of the crippling social
anxiety, especially in interviews.
And why are we even doing it? We’re
booked solid. We don’t need press.
MAURA
Right now. But maybe we’ll want to
expand in the future.
AMELIA
My life is a barely manageable
rocket launch from waking to
sleeping. I’m not expanding.
MAURA
Maybe you mean “Not yet.”
Off Amelia’s expression - she means “hard no.” But a plucky Maura knows her friend well and is undeterred.
15 INT. CANYON PARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - CLASSROOM - DAY 15 The classroom is a melee of joy and chaos as fourth graders - including Ruby - run about, chatting and laughing. Then their teacher MISS WEAVER, late-20’s, takes the floor. MISS WEAVER
Ba ba ba ba ba ba-
The room immediately quiets for the call and response - CHILDREN
Ba ba!
That’s all that’s needed for Ruby and her classmates to take their seats and watch as Miss Weaver displays a TREE DRAWING. MISS WEAVER
I’m excited to announce our next
big term project: we’ll be
exploring our heritage. Who knows
what heritage means?
Miss Weaver calls on an adorable child, OLIVER, 10. Blue Rev. (02/02/24) 19.
RUBY
It’s just... I already ate *
breakfast and packed our lunches.
Ruby hands Amelia a tin-foil wrapped mess.
RUBY (CONT'D)
It’s a spaghetti burrito.
AMELIA
You put spaghetti in a burrito?
RUBY
With ranch dressing.
Amelia smiles - “Thanks” - then steers out the kitchen. She pauses at the door, gestures to Ruby’s art pad presentation. AMELIA
Out of curiosity, what were points
3-10?
Ruby flips through the pad - it’s blank.
RUBY
I knew I’d get you on point two.
Amelia laughs to herself, heads off to get dressed. 26 INT. WEBER HOUSE - HOME OFFICE - DAY 26 *
Later that morning, Amelia finds Maura at her desk. MAURA
Hi there. How’d it go with Ruby?
Did she bring the idea back up?
Actually, I know Ruby well enough
to know she is driving that train. *
And I know you well enough to know
that you are slamming the breaks. *
AMELIA
(laughs)
We stopped on the way to school to
buy the genetic registry test.
MAURA
Wow. That’s big. I’m really proud
of you.
AMELIA
Proud? Why?
20.
MAURA
Because you’re opening up to the
unknown. It’s a big step for you.
AMELIA
I could just feel how deeply
curious she is about this. It
wasn’t going away easily.
MAURA
This must be pretty triggering.
Considering the history with your
father.
AMELIA
Or lack thereof.
(coping)
It’s fine. I mean, we probably
won’t be able to find any info. And
even if we do, it doesn’t mean we
have to contact him. And even if we
do contact him, he probably would
want nothing to do with her.
MAURA
But what if he does?
AMELIA
That’s not his choice, so I’m not
worried about it.
Maura gestures to Amelia’s empty crumpled coffee cup. AMELIA (CONT'D)
Yeah, okay. I mean, of course I’m
worried. Also it’s always been just
the two of us and I’ve worked hard
for Ruby to feel like that’s okay,
like we’re enough. But what if she
suddenly decides that we’re not?
In lieu of an answer, Maura pulls her friend in for a hug. 27 OMITTED 27
28 INT. FARMERS MARKET - CRUZ FAMILY FARMS BOOTH - DAY 28 Helped by an EMPLOYEE, T.J. oversees his family’s stand. He greets customers by name, helps them select produce. 27.
SOFIA
Who was that woman-
As she spots T.J.’s expression, immediately grow concerned. SOFIA (CONT'D)
Mijo, what’s wrong?
T.J.
You took a genetic registry test?
SOFIA
Yes. So relatives could find us.
T.J.
And a relative - of sorts - did
find us. It turns out...
(then)
I kind of... have a daughter.
The news explodes through the room. Pin-drop silence. Then Sofia screams with utter glee! Tomas hugs her tight! But T.J. looks less certain.
39 INT. HOUSE REMODEL - DAY 39
Over tupperware lunches, Amelia fills Maura in.
AMELIA
He does look like Ruby, it’s
uncanny. They even move the same.
And he seems kind like I thought.
(then)
But he also seems like a brooding,
bad boy, musician type.
MAURA
Daddy was a rolling stone.
AMELIA
Exactly! He’s smoldering and
bacchanalian and I’m sure he’s a
total commitment phobe-
MAURA
And you talked for how long?
AMELIA
Maybe ten, fifteen minutes?
28.
MAURA
Mm hmm.
AMELIA
What?
MAURA
Sounds like you really have this
guy pegged.
She gives a look and throws her balled up napkin at Maura. AMELIA
(worried)
And now he wants to meet her.
MAURA
And she’ll want to meet him too.
AMELIA
But he’s a stranger.
MAURA
So vet him. Deep dive his Insta.
AMELIA
Tried, doesn't even have one.
MAURA
Ok... so meet up for coffee. I
mean, of all the genetic
possibilities in the world, you
chose him. So this is your
opportunity to find out why.
Amelia sighs heavily.
AMELIA
I guess we could just have coffee.
MAURA
Yeah, it’s just coffee...
As Amelia picks up her phone to text T.J.-
MAURA (CONT'D)
(trolling Amelia)
With your long lost baby daddy.
40 INT. ALCHEMY CAFE - SALT LAKE CITY - DAY 40
An adorable, artisanal cafe, the patio filled with plants. Amelia enters, scans the space, spots T.J. at a table. Blue Rev. (02/02/24) 31.
AMELIA (CONT'D)
You’ve got a whole thing going on.
T.J.
And what thing is that?
AMELIA
Your whole rock and roll lifestyle
thing.
T.J.
Hang on- how many working musicians
do you know?
AMELIA
Well... you’re the first.
T.J.
Ok- so I don’t think it’s fair to
make assumptions about my
“lifestyle”. I mean- you don’t
even know me.
AMELIA
And that’s exactly the problem. I
don’t know you and yet I’m supposed
to decide if I want my daughter to?
T.J.
Don’t forget that you reached out
to me, Amelia. And I have to assume
you knew I’d want to meet Ruby...
(then, daring a joke)
But I’d hate to make an assumption.
Amelia and T.J. eye one another, sizing each other up. AMELIA
That wouldn’t be fair now would it?
41 INT. WEBER HOME - LAUNDRY ROOM - DAY 41 *
Lost in thought, Amelia finishes folding a pile of laundry. She hears a strange but familiar sound coming from Ruby’s bedroom. She heads toward it.
42 INT. WEBER HOME - RUBY'S ROOM - DAY 42
As she peeks in the room she sees Ruby sitting by her desk looking at the family iPad. She is listening to the RECORDING of TJ’s interview. When it finishes Ruby starts it over from the beginning and listens again.
Blue Rev. (02/02/24) 32.
Then on the desk behind her daughter Amelia spots Ruby’s FAMILY TREE. On a large poster board, a colorful TRUNK has been drawn, a PHOTO OF RUBY posted to it. Above Ruby is a PHOTO OF AMELIA.
Stemming from Amelia is a BRANCH with a PHOTO of Amelia’s Mom. But otherwise the family tree is empty, looking barren. Tears well up in her eyes as she realizes her daughters desire for connection. She braces herself out side the room for a minute and gains the courage to enter. She enters. AMELIA
Ruby, I have some news for you.
Ruby looks sheepish, she stops the recording.
RUBY
I’m sorry. I wasn’t on your email I
promise, it was already downloaded
on the iPad and I-
AMELIA
Ruby, it’s ok. I’m not upset at
you.
(beat)
I have something to tell you.
RUBY
Did it come?
Amelia hesitates. This is her last chance to back out. AMELIA
Yes, it came and... I found him.
RUBY
You found him? Like in person? I
want to meet him! Can I?!
And Amelia takes the biggest breath of her life.
AMELIA
Before I say yes I need you to *
listen, sweetie. I know you have a *
lot of big ideas of what you want
this to be, who you want him to be.
(then)
And I know it’s easy to get lost in
those ideas. But if you can, I’d
like you to remain measured.
(then)
Do you know what measured means?
Blue Rev. (02/02/24) 32A.
RUBY
Like only a certain amount of
something.
AMELIA
Exactly.
43 OMITTED 43
44 EXT. CRUZ FAMILY HOME - DAY 44
Ruby, wearing a party dress, jumps out the car. She’s wiggling, bursting with excitement.
Blue Rev. (02/02/24) 54.
AMELIA
(flattered)
Are you sure?
T.J.
I just want your first impression.
It came to me late last night so
it’s very new
He starts plucking, she locks in on him as he plays. The GUITAR RIFF continues over...
68 INT. WEBER HOME - LAUNDRY ROOM - DAY 68 *
Amelia tidies up, gathering Ruby’s shoes and toys strewn about and carrying them to Ruby’s room.
69 INT. WEBER HOME - RUBY'S ROOM - DAY 69
Amelia drops the items on Ruby’s floor for her to organize. Then Amelia notes the family tree, moves to it.
Above Ruby’s photo, a new branch has been painstakingly drawn, a photo of T.J. affixed to it.
And stemming from T.J. Ruby has drawn the outlines of branches - spots where his side of the family would be. Next to the tree, Amelia finds computer PRINT OUTS about Pando The Tree - Amelia leafs through them, then looks back to the family tree.
Amelia texts Sofia: “Thank you for the invite - we’d love to come to Mateo’s party.”
The GUITAR RIFF MUSIC CUE ends.
70 EXT. CRUZ FAMILY FARMS - PARKING LOT - DAY 70
Amelia’s SUV pulls up and Amelia, Maura and Ruby - wearing a party dress and carrying T.J.’s GLASS DISH - step out. They begin to walk to the house, but then Ruby stops. AMELIA
What’s going on, honey?
RUBY
Just wondering. Should I bring baby
Taylor into the party?
Blue Rev. (02/02/24) 72.
Then T.J. scans the shop for Ruby, finds her playing a guitar. One foot is up on the stool, her “shred face” in full force. T.J. smiles to himself.
87 INT. WEBER HOME - LAUNDRY ROOM - LATE-AFTERNOON 87 * Amelia dances to music as she finishes folding the laundry. There’s a spring to her step - she seems livelier, relaxed. She grabs a pile of Ruby’s clothes, carries it to her room. 88 INT. WEBER HOME - RUBY'S ROOM - LATE-AFTERNOON 88 Amelia sets the clothes down on Ruby’s bed.
Then she steers to the FAMILY TREE on the desk. Since Amelia last saw it, a dozen branches have been added, each lovingly colored in and pasted with a PHOTO of a Cruz family member. There’s Sofia, Tomàs, T.J.’s sisters, Mateo and more. Amelia studies it - touched but conflicted.
Just as the doorbell RINGS, startling her.
89 EXT. WEBER HOME - PORCH - DAY 89
On the porch, Amelia’s surprised to find Sofia holding a box filled with Mason Jars.
SOFIA
Hi!
Sofia gives Amelia her customary bear hug. And unlike the last few instances, this time Amelia looks grateful for it. But as they pull away, Sofia notes Amelia is confused. SOFIA (CONT'D)
Oh, Mija, I’m sorry. Did you not
realize I was stopping by?
(then)
I told you on the family thread.
AMELIA
I didn’t see that. Last I checked,
Tomás was still looking for the
paper towels.
96.
ACT NINE
109 INT. WEBER HOME - AMELIA'S BEDROOM - DAY 109
We open once more on Amelia waking in her bed -
Except this time her eyes are open - she didn’t sleep a wink. 110 INT. WEBER HOME - RUBY'S ROOM - DAY 110
Entering, Amelia spots Ruby under the covers. Amelia sits down on the bed beside Ruby who’s awake.
AMELIA
How are you doing, honey?
RUBY
Terrible. And I don’t even want to
write a song about it. And I’m not
going to present my family tree.
AMELIA
Maybe give it more thought, love.
(then)
And I’m sorry. I know it hurts. But
also I know it’ll be okay.
RUBY
How do you know?
AMELIA
Because I’ve felt the way you feel
before. And I was okay.
111 EXT. CRUZ FAMILY HOME - PORCH - DAY 111
T.J. climbs the porch stairs, lets himself into the house. 112 INT. CRUZ FAMILY HOME - KITCHEN - DAY 112
Entering, T.J. finds Sofia and Tomás having coffee. SOFIA
How’s the packing going?
T.J.
It’s fine. I’m just trying to
figure out which guitars to bring.
MAURA (CONT'D)
98.
didn’t break her heart - you’d
never let him close enough to have
the chance.
This pierces Amelia. She knows it’s true but feebly argues - AMELIA
I’m just trying to protect-
MAURA
Don’t give me the whole “trying to
protect Ruby” shpiel. I’ve heard it
as an excuse for every phase of
your life. I’ve never bought it and
I still don’t.
(gentler)
If you want to live a guarded life,
that’s your choice. But Ruby
shouldn’t pay the price for it.
And a chastised Amelia suddenly sees the light.
114 INT. FARMERS MARKET - CRUZ FAMILY FARMS BOOTH - DAY 114 T.J. sits alone in the market. Tooling on his guitar, distracted and in his own world.
As he plays he looks toward his wrist and spot the bracelet again. He stops playing for a minute and thinks.
T.J. has an idea, whips out his phone, makes a call. T.J.
Hey Trey, it’s T.J. I wanted to
discuss the tour schedule with you.
(then)
I real want to make this work but I
have a few caveats.
AMELIA (PRELAP)
Ruby! It’s time for dinner.
115 OMITTED 115
116 INT. WEBER HOME - RUBY'S ROOM - NIGHT 116
Amelia heads down the hallway looking for Ruby.
AMELIA
What are you doing, honey?
99.
RUBY
(fake coughs)
I think I’m sick. I probably
shouldn’t go to school tomorrow.
AMELIA
And does this have anything to do
with tomorrow being open house
night/family tree presentation?
RUBY
Oh, is that tomorrow?
AMELIA
(laughs)
I’m so glad you’re a terrible liar.
It’s gonna help me in your teenage
years.
Amelia sits beside her daughter, strokes her hair. AMELIA (CONT'D)
Sweetie, you wanted to find T.J.
because you wanted to know who you
are, right?
(Ruby nods)
Well, who you are isn’t dictated by
your genes or your parents. Only
you can decide who you are.
Ruby absorbs this, brightens slightly.
Then, a question that has been on her mind -
RUBY
Are the Cruz’s still our relatives?
AMELIA
Yes, they’ll always be our
relatives. And I also hope they’ll
always be our family. And maybe our
family tree doesn’t look the way
you thought or wanted it to. But it
doesn’t make us any less family.
Ruby takes this to heart, mulls something, then brightens. RUBY
Do we have any more poster board?
AMELIA
I think so. Why?
Blue Rev. (02/02/24) 100.
RUBY
Because I want to remake my family
tree. And better make me coffee. I
might have to pull an all nighter.
AMELIA
(laughs)
That’s a hard no.
But Amelia hugs Ruby tight - “That’s my girl.”
117 EXT. CANYON PARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - DAY 117 * The next night and -
Amelia, Maura and Ruby - carrying a large POSTER BOARD, her new family tree, yet to be revealed - enter the school. 118 INT. CANYON PARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - HALLWAY - DAY 118 * As they steer towards Ruby’s classroom, Amelia’s phone DINGS. It’s the Cruz family thread blowing up as usual.
Sofia TEXTS: “Amelia, wish Ruby luck with her presentation.” Elena texts back: “My Mom means PLEASE wish her luck.” Amelia laughs. Then more DINGS as Tomás hearts the message, then Bianca and Camila sends emojis.
And as Amelia watches the texts flood in - a realization. She stops walking, looks to Ruby and Maura -
AMELIA
You head in. I’ll be right there.
Then Amelia begins to type a message to the family thread... her first message. She hesitates briefly, then sends it. Immediately, her phone DINGS with responses.
Whatever’s happening, Amelia looks happy about it. 119 INT. CANYON PARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - CLASSROOM - DAY 119 * We’re in the middle of presentations, Ruby’s classmate Oliver displaying his family tree.
Amelia stands in the back with the other parents and Maura.
