WORK HISTORY

February 2021 – To date:

Support worker with Nurse Plus and Care More Care Providers.

During the last 3 months of my engagement with both care Providers, I have consistently been placed at Queen Elizabeth Foundation Rehabilitation Centre in Leatherhead. The Clientele at the Centre are mainly individuals with Brain injuries, spinal injuries, and Mental ill health. I work closely with psychiatrists, physiotherapists, psychologists, and Occupational Therapists in supporting individuals with managing their emotional, physical, and psychological needs. I am also actively involved with hands-on support to patients to deliver and perform exercises that enhance their rehabilitation goals as may be recommended.

I have also had the fantastic opportunity to work with young people with Autism and challenging behaviour at a Respite/Residential Centre in Surrey - Ruth House. My engagement has been majorly working night shifts at least 3 nights a week, with one-to-one support as may be assigned to me. I have continued to work well with other colleagues at the Centre and with the recent MAPA training, I have confidence in working well in challenging environments.

May 2019 to August 2020: I worked as a Support worker with 2 Agencies, Extra Mile and Elgon Solutions.

My duties were to assist and support the elderly mostly in care home settings of which duties included support with; personal care, toileting tasks, support with appropriate dressing, supervision with mobilising, moving and handling, assistance with feeding tasks when required, prompting with medication, ensuring that immediate areas are tidied, providing appropriate emotional support, and managing and maintaining a safe environment for the people with whom I work.

September 2010 to May 2019: Personal Assistant to a 38-year-old male with Autism.

Duties at my current employment involve supporting a male individual with his day-to-day activities which involve personal care, access to the community – Day centre and attending social functions such as swimming and attending local social clubs. I also support the individual and his family in identifying needs that would be beneficial to enable the client to engage in a more active and fulfilled life, based on the individual’s personal interests.

April 2000 to September 2010: Support Worker with the Royal MENCAP Society

My duties at MENCAP were varied based on the extent and nature of need at the different residential homes with which I had the opportunity to work.

While at MENCAP, I gained extensive experience in working with individuals with severe, moderate and mild disabilities.

I supported individuals to access the community daily. As part of a team, I supported in the organising of various activities to keep service users engaged and involved in their daily activities. On regular occasions, I accompanied service users on holidays and short breaks whenever called upon.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

Although I hold a BA degree in Business Administration, I have always worked within the social care sector. I am admirably adapted to the social care environment in which I remain comfortable to offer personal care, as well as supporting service users to access the community and to maintain their wellbeing. I have worked with individuals with a wide range of need on the Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Epilepsy, Downs syndrome, as well as with individuals within Supported Living settings.

My experience as a support worker and Personal Assistant to individuals with various levels of need, has enhanced my level of empathy not only towards adults at risk but also towards their families. Through my experience, I have gathered that my duties are not confined to the Service user only. I found that it was imperative to create a good working relationship with the family and with my colleagues if the best outcomes were to be achieved for the individuals with whom I work. I clearly understand the importance of treating each person as an individual but most of all, to respect people and not be judgemental about their abilities or inabilities. I have particularly found the attribute of patience to be a significant part of working with vulnerable people, which up to now, has enabled me to work well with service users, colleagues, and employers.

Given that I was mostly involved in working shift patterns as well as working with different staff, I gained a critical understanding of keeping prompt, updated and accurate records which allowed for clear communication and smooth transitions between different shifts and handing over of duties. I also believe that I work well with others, and this, in addition to being a reliable staff is an attribute for which I have been continuously recognised.

While at MENCAP, I was regularly entrusted with handling service user finances. Not only did I develop competence in accounting for finances, I demonstrated my capability of transparency, proportionality, and remaining accountable to my colleagues, service users, and employer.

I understand the need to attend and update my training in line with the needs of specific work settings as well as completing mandatory training. I remain committed to redefining my role within the care sector and I am open to any development opportunities that may arise at any given time.

Personal interests:

In my past-time, I like swimming, cycling, nature walks (but not camping), watching documentaries, Political commentaries and topical issues.

I also like spending time with my two sons 9 and 7 years old with whom I attend activities, and engage in various activities including football, basketball, swimming, and gymnastics whenever possible.
