I'm semi retired ( flying around the country for work has lost its appeal),having decided to live in Reno due to its location for fly fishing, hiking, and most importantly finishing a M.A. in American History at UNR. There's a professor that is world renowned in the study of manifest destiny. While I don't have to work, I get bored sitting around (I'm learning Spanish),( I enjoy dealing with customers/guests and employee problem solving.)
Working in ski areas has become both financially prohibitive and scary. I've been thru the A.N.S.I. lift training, obtained various other certificates; most areas don't spend money on training. Customers being left on closed lifts and other dangerous situations has become common place? I also have a fork lift and tractor certificate .

When the federal tax acts became regressive towards real estate (the savings and loan banks/Japanese banks lending crisis I became for the lack of a better term a "hired gun" on the owners side vs. the buy side of non performing real estate assets.
A significant part of the job was dealing with employees who were discouraged in their lot in life and attempting to get them to become productive. The more interesting aspect was dealing with borrowers who in many cases had guaranteed huge loans and had no way to repay them. Honing your people skills by having to explain to a borrowers spouse not only were they broke but all the assets they had were pledged to lender. This worked out well in that I was having to be Mr. Mom for 2 sons in a highly contentious divorce. lift operator

Vail,Alterra, Sun Valley
Park City, Mammoth, Sun Valley
Not knowing where I wanted to live, I came out west . Mammoth was great except for the 4 hour drive to get to anywhere. Same with Sun Valley ( also the costs were just plain crazy and driving a hour to work didn't work) Park City is just plain crazy?
Cleaning vomit etc. out of gondola cars isn't fun but was part of the job. Lastly the resorts were/are just hiring unqualified operators who have no incentive to do a good job, they're there for the pass. You have to take responsibility in the lift operator business first it's all about safety, second guest relations and lastly achieving the resorts expectations ( being on time being proactive being an impact player.)
