In Home Support Services (IHSS) - Marina del Rey, CA May 2023 to November 2023

This position was 7 days a week, for six hours a day, three in the morning and three at night. I was caring for an elderly woman in her early 80's, who had been paralyzed from the waist down since her early teenage years. She has mobility via the use of an electric wheelchair but is otherwise bedridden.

• as an in-home health aid, I performed tasks that included taking the patient out of bed every morning and night via Hoyer lift, making her bed, and organizing her things so that she could reach them. Next, I would present her choices of clothing to dress her in. I would change her diaper and remove her catheter while replacing the chuck on the bed while she is still lying down.

• Many tasks required me to turn the patient on their side and place the materials slightly folded underneath her body (about halfway) - then I turn her to the opposite side and unfold the rest of the item

• Other tasks included making the patient’s breakfast and dinner, washing her dishes, putting on her compression socks and booties, brushing her hair, and other types of grooming.

• Bathroom assistance consisted of transferring the patient from the bed - to the electric wheelchair - to the commode/shower and back to the chair or bed )all via the Hoyer lift).

• Catheter care once a day, cleaning the genital area. Incontinence pads were accompanied by pull- up underwear.

• This position also included daily duties such as hand-feeding, bathing, doing her laundry, and buying groceries and other personal items Household chores were also included, such as sweeping and mopping and disinfecting surfaces, folding clothes, trimming her nails, asking what she'd like to be dressed in for the day and for bedtime, and offering companionship. Making sure her other caretakers were acting appropriately was very important to me, as I know how often elder abuse is committed and how generally mistreated they are by nursing/caretaking staff.

• The patient’s previous caretaker was committing elder abuse, which I’m mandated to report. This caregiver would come to work under the influence, (causing imbalance and poor spatial awareness that led to the patient being dropped and banged into walls while lifted in the air). She also stole from the patient, and would oftentimes FAIL TO SHOW UP without any notice (leaving the patient in her wheelchair all night and day) depriving them of catheter care, drinking water, or the ability to rest. The patient didn’t want me to make a report due to sympathy for her abuser - but I will advocate for her rights even if she is afraid to.

• .The job only paid 17.00 an hour which is not enough at the moment FOH Team Member
