Duties & responsibilities
Assessment of vital signs and collection of information from various available sources regarding health and illness history of individuals experiencing psychiatric illness, providing mental status examination / assessment, planning of care and drawing nursing interventions within the unit. Educating patients and their family on the nature of illness of the individual and possible prognosis, ensuring admission procedures are carried out and patient is oriented to other clients as well as his immediate environment.
Preventing crisis and aggressiveness by understanding each patient’s behaviour and using talking therapy in managing anger . Freezing patients to ensure they are free from injurious objects and ensuring a safe physical environment.
Co-ordination of patient’s care in collaboration with other members of the therapeutic team,; doctors, psychologists, social workers and occupational therapists in order to ensure patient’s maximization of full hospital services.
Consultation and communication of patient’s care with various service providers and stakeholders such as family members and therapeutic team Collection and documentation of health information as well as maintaining clinical records of patient’s; progress reports nursing intervention, and observations, parent review including themes discussed.
Participating in interdisciplinary case conferences and working as a team with other professionals on research topics
Administering oral, intramuscular and intravenous drugs and documenting effects on clients. Ensuring adequate nutrition, grooming and maintaining overall good physical appearance. Promoting patient’s right to health service, knowledge about treatment, privacy, confidentiality and dignity

Duties & Responsibilities
Pre-operative admission of patients and assessment of baseline vital signs. History taking and general head to toe examination of patients during admission. Giving vital information to family member regarding patient’s condition, hospital policies and regulations Co-coordinating care in collaboration with interdisciplinary members such as the surgeon,and anesthetists, peri-operative nurses, laboratory scientists and physiotherapists to ensure flow of hospital service delivery.
Participating in daily ward round and documenting progress and new development in the treatment plan
Participating in making care plans, nursing interventions and implementation with other colleagues and communicating plans to patients and family members Facilitating timely consultations by doctors and care delivery by nurses to quick recovery and consequently discharge from hospital. Acting as an advocate to promote and protect the patient’s right
Coordinating daily activities including servicing of meals, medication, wound dressing, care of cast, catheterization, pre-operative preparations, gastric tube and naso-gastric tube feeding, care of colostomy bag and rehabilitation. Ensuring routine blood glucose level check. Monitoring of patients on life support due to congestive cardiac failure, cardiovascular accident, diabetic Keto acidosis and documenting findings with the aim of informing other health teams. Educating patients and family on health themes and advising them on drug compliance, keeping hospital appointment
Participating in continuing education, workshops and seminars and monitoring junior staff and student nurses through role modeling
