Duties during surgery: Watch operative fields and anticipate surgeon’s needs. Maintain supplies and utilize strict sterile technique and watch for and correct any breaks in sterile technique amongst self and other members of the team. Specific surgeon competencies including handling of instruments.

At the conclusion of operation: Provide dressing materials appropriately to the incision or per surgeon’s preferences. Prepare instruments for reprocessing; remove all sharps, including blades, needles, pins, wires. Help in transferring the patient to the gurney and cleaning up all instruments.

C. PACU Nurse:

Before the surgery: Prepare patients for surgery.

After the surgery: Monitor vital signs and level of consciousness, assess patient’s comfort level, ask patients about their level of pain, administer pain medications as ordered, educate patients and their families about home care instructions.
