Duties, Accomplishments and Related Skills:

• Independently performs routine, stat, life threatening, and specialized venipuncture of in-patients and out- patients.

• Answer phone calls related to phlebotomy from the medical staff and patients.

• Records phlebotomy collection times and patient information on the collection log.

• Ensures all blood collections are completed in a timely manner.

• Check in out-patients using the VISTA HOWDY Computerized Phlebotomy check in computer systems.

• Accession, review, cancel, and reorder lab orders as needed using the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VISTA).

• Properly label all blood and other body fluid sample using to two patient identifiers.

• Call providers to verify and/or reconcile patient orders for clarification.

• Assists specimen processing with multiple functions such as receiving and distributing specimens throughout the laboratory. Communicate with staff if specimens are STAT or LTE.

• Performs direct patient care duties by directing, instructing, and assisting patients and medical staff with specimen collection and processing of blood samples, urine samples (Urinalysis, culture, urine drug screens, and 24 hour collection) and stool samples (culture, parasitology, etc.).

• Assist in training of students, nursing staff, medical technologist, and/or new phlebotomy employees rotating through phlebotomy.

• Maintains records and maintenance in phlebotomy: clean phlebotomy area (chairs, counters, ID calculators), clean glassware, eye wash checks, rotate stock, and restock in on carts and in phlebotomy outpatient room. Report any issues to supervisor.

• Follows safety regulations per OSHA, HIPPA, CDC, JCACHO, and the VA Medical Center and the Laboratory Safety Manual.
