EXPERIENCE

Cloud and DCIP Solutions Leader, ICBC

November 2021 - Present

Information Technology Solution Lead (as a Lead Infrastructure Architect) with focus on ICBCs cloud design, rollout and migration. Team lead designing a ITIL based migration of applications such as SAP (R/3 and R/4), Oracle and SQL databases, extended Active Directory and email towards a Hybrid Cloud (Azure and AWS, and Oracle Exadata). Working with the account team to migrate over Automation and ITIL/ITSM type moves over to Dynatrace. Conduct Executive presentations and build a case for a staggered transformation of computing from current Data Center space to Cloud based. Build an ongoing rolling TCO/ROI model outlining specific and changing CaPEX and OPEX aligned to People, Process, Technology, Risk and Support.

Built out a three tier architecture with a full Proof of Concept for Disaster recovery between two Data Centers and the outsourced cloud backup provider. The design is Nutanix for all the virtualization with Windows and Linux applications with SQL databases. The Disaster Recovery is based on Synchronized and Asynchronized replication between storage volumes and application to database profiles for production and non-production.

Created a customized in house Container Standard portfolio using Kubernetes Orchestration (On RedHat Openshift). Helped build a project path to migrate all internal Guidewire applications over to Containers (running Docker) and over to Azure or AWS cloud, depending on the production requirements.

Helped with the design and implementation of a Dynatrace AI and Support platform using the Full-Stack Monitoring application. Also, worked closely with the Application Development team to transition Guidewire application over to Azure (in an online migration).

Using performance tools such as Precisely to help with SAP R/4 HANA migration and deployment

For the hybrid cloud based migration, Disaster Recovery will encompass Back up of Azure Stack HCI, Hub and Edge data, virtual machines, with infrastructure on-premises. Also designed and built disaster recovery of virtual machines(on Nutanix) to Microsoft Azure with failover and failback capabilities.

Working with Aligning Networking to Palo Alto firewalls, and Cloud Based Backup and recovery to Cohesity with Helios.

Built out Roadmap presentations for aligning key items such as Cloud Landing Zones, Layered Network Components, Data Storage with CiFS, NFS. Data Types such as Structured and Semi-structured data. Specifically complete roadmap and transformation designs for Netbackup to Cohesity, Azure and AWS backup to Cohesity Helios. Also provide Audit and compliance workable scenarios.

Designed Azure Landing zone deployments to support VMware Windows and Linux servers as well as SQL DB and associated insurance applications.

Also, working on a complete Infrastructure as Code rollout using two of the industry standard tools. One of the tools is for a Hybrid cloud situation, which includes AWS and Azure (Terraform).

Lead Advisor Working on a team with developers and architects to design a few private and federated BlockChain solutions for Supply chain management, manufacturing, credit transactions. And redesign an existing non-profit volunteered based Block Chain token. Also working closely with UBC around building other Blockchain and Hyperledger based solutions for Logisitics, Manufacturing, Medicine, Credit based use for services etc. Our design portfolio and documents are stored in a Microsoft Azure cloud for local and remote access(our development team is based out of Europe and Canada). Our virtual machines are on AWS EC2 with S3 storage. Java based and also GoLang full-stack design and development stored on AWS for our applications. We also have created a File systems storage on Azure as we would like to use Data Storage with SQL Database and Web and Mobile APIs. Work on Cloud or hybrid cloud Migration projects for some of our customers. Conduct a quick TCO/ROI analysis along with an ITIL based migration study. Used DevOps and Agile principles with design, development or migration. Used high level design tools (Python, .NET) with Geological mapping. Worked very closely with Kubernetes Containers.

Worked with mid size organisations to put together a business case with a TCO/ROI model as well as a business process transformation model to transition to either a Hybrid Cloud model or a full scale transformation to Cloud. Specifically with Big Data, Database, Storage and Managing, Mitigating and load balancing traffic. Created Storage folders online and deduplicated and single stored unstructured and structured data within CiFS/ADS and SQL data.

February 2018 – February 2020

Designed and migrated small and midsize customers over to AWS via VMs on EC2 with EBS storage running Windows or Linux servers and some S3 storage for application and databases. All of this was backed up and/or replicated for archiving, compliance and audit as required. Worked with heterogenous Cost models to supply a rolling/ongoing Cost management for the customers to manage their TCO/ROI.

Managed and maintained a rolling Operational Expense model and matched It to budget cycles from the founders. Helped manage small customer migrations to an Azure cloud with online storage and backup/archiving. And migrated running applications onto the cloud running Outlook/Exchange, SQL servers, IIS and web application services as required. Also eventually moved the CiFS shares.

Also built a team of FTEs and contractors for cloud help, migrations, presales and post sales work, via the partner channel. Solutions designed include audit for unstructured and semi-structured data, Custom auditable dark net security software, Seamless VPN type privacy for LAN, WAN. Worked as a design architect helping out the developers to build iOS and Android applications using a Kubernetes back end. Helped with the command line based calls for some instances of the application function.

Designed HSM instances for efficient storage management across data sets either locally within data centers or migrated or newly built on AWS or Google cloud with compliance and audit mechanisms. And used Cloudtape with zOS for HSM as well as linux/zOS based data archiving.Helped as an architect for development teams and worked within a DevOps framework and with Agile and waterfall design scenarios for various mobile, storage and data warehousing applications. Help with and Lead the architectural design for Clients looking at migration, integration and outsourcing of data and application from in-house to either data center space or within the cloud.

Responsible for the creation of Virtual instances from the Server, Storage and Replication side based on a prefilled profile. Primarily using VMware ESX instances on EC2 with ESB and shared storage for clustered VMs and running SQL or exchange databases, or for RedHat Linux web and portal application servers, running either in standalone or in clustered mode on the cloud.

Validated and tested out Luminex Cloudtape Channel Gateway mainframe virtual tape (MVT) solutions to provide storage of infrequently-accessed and long-term retention data, such as archives or additional copies of tape data, in geographically dispersed and encrypted secure cloud-disk storage.

Built an IBM based HSM facility on zOS for audit and hierarchical access and also tiered storage across performance based SSD and disk.

April 2013 – December 2015

Working on a team of Systems Architects. To re-design, test, plan and score before migration (and implementation) of a new IBM and Cisco based server and NetApp Storage layout. Migration is being done from EMC and HDS storage over to NetApp Storage. Built out a full Disaster Recovery design based on two Data Centers in Kamloops and Calgary. Used Netapp Asynchronous replication with SAP, Oracle and SQL agents.

The applications included Web-Based billing, GIS management systems, Oracle financials, SAP R/3, Exchange, SQL and VMWare with either Oracle 8i, 9i or MS SQL databases. All this work was done for BC Hydro as they moved over to Telus for outsourcing (away from ABSU). Managed an HSM data center and profile for Archived and long term retention data for compliance and audit capabilities on an IBM Aix system with Tivoli HSM and Db/2.

Provided initial design for RedHat Linux/zOS based migrations to Cloud based tape for archiving. Designed and Presented the Data Center technology (components). Designed servers, storage and backup needs within 8 of Telus data centers across BC, Alberta, Ontario and Québec. Helped with Database design and modeling(SQL, Oracle, DB/2 with VMware with Windows or Linux) and melded NAS, SAN and iSCSI storage with archiving and replication.

Independent Consultant (On contract) BC Hydro

February 2009 – January 2013

Senior Systems Architect working on the redesign and implementation of a brand new Oracle, SAP and Exchange/SQL environment on AIX and Windows for BC Hydro. Redesign and migration planning of their mix of EMC arrays, IBM DS8000 and SVC, and NetApp FC and NAS filers and arrays. This work also included planning and architecting using various storage protocols including moving from Fibre Channel to IP and iSCSI based protocols. Disaster Recovery and Replication planning and hosting between current site to Telus site in Burnaby as well as replication to Kelowna and Calgary. Worked with BC Hydro Staff and ABSU consulting team to assess and redesign their SAN and NAS environment around Windows, VMWare, AIX and Linux with Oracle, Exchange and SAP. Lead resource that helped put out a new and complete RFP for storage, storage services as well as backup technologies after doing a complete analysis of their current storage and backup infrastructure with application support. Also reworked the project carry-on plan and the overall support, transition and adoption plan.

Presales Team lead and Americas Senior Manager (at NetApp) retaining highly skilled business process consultants and technology architects as part of the sales team. In terms of Compliance, ran a practice with Netapp doing assessments and compliance studies using HiPAA standards and also data assessments using tools for the purpose of better systems design and performance. Lead architect and project manager responsible for the strategic migration of a Sybase ASE 12.5.3 group of databases from Tru64 to Solaris 9. Responsibilities include technical resource management of Sybase DBA architects, strategy and test plan document creation and presentation, complete test plan creation and implementation management and final document review and migration plan implementation.

Lead Infrastructure Architect responsible for the analysis, design and implementation of a very large financial enterprise (Citadel Funds, Chicago) backup, archive, restore(RPO and RTO based) and Disaster Recovery solution leveraging VMware, Oracle 8i and 9i, Veritas Netbackup, Netapp FAS and Nearstore, AIX and DB2 and KVS for Exchange; ILM/HSM and NDMP v4 technologies. Deliverables include a detailed findings report, detailed technology analysis(Virtual Tape, HSM and tiered storage strategies), detailed recommendations report and a migration strategy. Team technical manager for a IBM Blade Center architecture for server consolidation and deployment in a complex Windows 2000/2003 and linux environment. Responsbile for the planning, design and integration including VMware ESX SAN boot, snapshot OS deployment and Veritas Netbackup Enterprise integration. Storage used was a combination of IBM FastT, IBM SVC and IBM ESS (shark).

Technical presales lead responsible for the architecture and redesign of (at the time) largest Canadian Oracle database migration in the Sun UE10000 storage environment to IBM AIX and IBM ESS (Shark).

Authored the production of the prestigious IBM Redbooks publication on performance tuning for the Elite IBM storage subsystems line in the Mainframe zOS and Open Systems area. Performed a large data migration (for Best Buy Canada) involved transforming and transitioning approximately 15TB of Oracle (6, 7 and 8) database data from Sun StorEDGE to IBM Enterprise Storage Server (Shark).
