Dear Hiring Team,

I am writing to express my deep interest in the position that you are offering. I currently have a very solid foundation in computer science and a tremendous passion for developing innovative software. I am truly excited about the opportunity to contribute to your team. My background includes countless years of software development, with a decent focus on Python and its applications in implementing test equipment and artificial intelligence. I also currently have a secret security clearance that was provided to me by Raytheon from my previous job.

I am applying for this position because I got laid off from my previous job. Before I got laid off, I was a software engineer at Raytheon Technologies. When they hired me, the war between Russia and Ukraine was going strong so they recruited a lot of people including me in order to provide aid to Ukraine. However, presumably, because the government is not so willing to give military aid to Ukraine anymore, this means less business for Raytheon as a defense contractor so they had to lay some people off including me to restructure their business. During my time at Raytheon Technologies, I was part of a project where we worked on setting up test equipment that is meant to test missile components that are meant to allow for increased production capacity of the ESSM and AMRAAM missiles. Python is the main language that is used in running production with the test equipment, and I had to utilize Linux to run the Python software on the test equipment multiple times and spend time troubleshooting issues in order to finally get it fixed and working correctly. In addition to sharpening my technical skills in Python, this experience also gave me a good opportunity to understand the deeper functionalities of Linux and how useful it can be with software developers.

Even if my qualifications do not match the job description that is advertised, my hope is that you do not see this as a deterrent to interviewing and hiring me. For one, I am always open to learning and exploring new things. If I had not had the exact qualifications in the past, this does not mean that I will not be able to do the job, it just means that I have an even greater potential to benefit from this position since I will be learning a lot more new things than someone who has had a lot of prior experience in what is advertised. Furthermore, as an underqualified person, I will be a lot more motivated to learn new things and be productive than someone who meets the qualifications.
